Another incumbent goes down. Probably best for the Democrats as they were in danger of losing this seat in the general. Now they are likely to keep it.

SALEM — Seth Moulton, a Harvard University graduate and Marine veteran, became the first Massachusetts Democrat in 22 years to oust a sitting congressman from his own party, edging aside embattled nine-term US Representative John F. Tierney.

The veteran North Shore congressman conceded shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, as Moulton maintained an 11 percentage point lead with 27 percent of the vote counted.

Appealing to voters’ sense of frustration with intransigence in Washington, Moulton made a compelling case for an overhaul, even in Tierney’s home precinct in Salem.
