Here in the United States, some people want to remove all reminders of our Civil War.

I have just learned something fascinating about Mexico: Apparently, the Mexican people do NOT mind being reminded about an unpleasant chapter in their history.

About the time of our Civil War, Mexico was ruled by Emperor Maximilian, whom France forced on Mexico.

When the Mexicans eventually overthrew the Emperor, he was executed.

On the spot where he was executed, a chapel was eventually built.

It is in the city of Queretaro, whose government has recently voted to spend money for the chapel's upkeep.

(Wikipedia has a short article on this topic)

I salute Mexico for respecting history.

I wish that all Americans had a similar respect for history.
