Conservatives have used it over the years as their number one scare the bejabbers out of people and the only safeguard is to vote Republican. And because Marx called the preparation of the people to enter communism "scientific socialism" socialism has had a secondary impact. But as one looks at the garbled definitions of those two terms one wonders how many of us even know what they mean? How many nations on this planet have been, or are, communistic, how many socialistic?

How old are you regent ? Like ten years old? The House Un-American Activities Committee was a democrat party creation. It was created as a legitimate way to expose the communist infiltration into American society and government. Even though HUAC was created during the Truman administration the joke still stood that there were more communists in the FDR administration than there were in the Kremlin. Like it or not lefties, communism was seen as the enemy of democracy back in the late 40's and 50's. JFK decided that Castro's communist regime was such a threat to the US that he commissioned his Attorney General (who was also his brother) to murder Castro any way he could. Even though communism had been creeping throughout Central America the radical left wing of the new democrat party which was in love with communism created a barrier called the Boland amendment inserted into a Military appropriations bill to impeach Reagan when he decided to help the Nicaragua people combat communist infiltration.

The cold war is over. Cuba is not a threat. Indeed, in many ways, Cuba is in a lot better shape than we are.

It is to our advantage to keep Russia (Putin) close to us. We don't need some naive and fumble-mouth like Mittens getting us in to new wars with everyone he insults.

Thanks to President Obama, the START TREATY has made the world a much safer place for us all in that we can only kill each other about 400 times over. The other guys gave up real weapons while President Obama gave up ONLY our oldest and non-working weapons.

Why don't the rw's understand that it really is to our advantage to educate our kids? give our own people good health care? Take care of our elderly?

Other countries are teaching their kids other languages so that they can compete on the WORLD stage. In India, the state subsidizes education but the rw's don't seem to understand WHY, when they call for technical help with a gadget, they get to talk to someone they can barely understand.

Its because our own people are learning how to super-size a McMurder Meal.

While other countries are being educated for the very technical/computer future, we're screeching "English only".

Even Mexico, that the right hates so much, is leaving us behind.

We have hundreds of thousands of technical jobs available and we're having to fill them from other countries because the right is cutting education here.

I'm not sure I speak for "rw's", but I specifically don't want my government pushing us to compete on the world stage. World dominance isn't something I particularly value.

I think you're missing the point though. People who complain about government-run compulsory schooling aren't opposed to education, they're concerned with who controls it (students and parents vs the state). They value freedom and diversity over conformity.

Social Security is socialist and has worked well for 76 years.

Medicare is socialist and is keeping my father alive.

I was under the impression that the I in FICA (Social Security) stood for Insurance. I also was led to believe that if I paid the Social Security premium (It was taken from my paycheck without my permission) that I would be entitled to collect a benefit check at age 62.

I an also required to pay a payroll tax called Medicare that is to provide partial payment of my medical expenses at age 65.

When I die, my beneficiary will get a rather large sum of money from a life insurance policy because I pay a premium once a month.

If I have an accident in my car, it will be repaired or replaced because I pay an insurance company a yearly premium.

I guess you are right. We are a nation of socialists.
