The intention of the 2nd ammendment has been changed or lost over the past 200 years. It was never the right to, just, bear guns. It is the right to bear arms. The 1700 definition of arms is below.
The majority of arms of the 21st century have been banned from ownership by citizens.
If you want to fight for the 2nd ammendment, go after all arms, not just guns. Guns will not get you too far when up against the arms of the 21st century.

Timothy Cunningham's important 1771 legal dictionary defined ''arms'' as ''any thing that a man wears for his defence, or takes into his hands, or useth in wrath to cast at or strike another.''

This is how....

Tweak the Constitution and Federal Law just enough to allow some reasonable controls on firearms

* Establish mandatory Federal standards that the States are obliged to follow

We already have all the laws we need.....the problem is the democrat party keeps releasing violent gun offenders no matter how many gun felonies and crimes they commit.

No... we DON'T "have all the laws we need" in a gun-control context.

We have fifty separate States screwing this up... the States have had 240+ years to get it right... and they've failed miserably.

Time to bring gun-control under the umbrella of the Federal government with one uniform (and generous) set of standards.

It will be possible to firmly entrench Gun Rights and to clearly define them and to force States and Cities to keep hands-off.

It will be possible for someone in Honolulu to buy and license a gun and carry it with confidence in Bangor Maine, etc.

The Idiot Democrats and their liberal offender-release policies are a different conversation but there is some linkage there.

* Establish mandatory Federal databases for all owners, firearms, licenses, dealers, transactions and transfers, etc.

A mandatory data base is simply used by people like you to ban and confiscate guns once you have the power to do it. Data bases do not stop criminals who use straw buyers or steal their guns.

You've seen "Red Dawn" once too often ...it is possible to codify Federal Law so that this cannot be easily attempted.

As to "ghost guns" and "printed guns" and "straw guns" etc. you crucify such offenders in Federal courts... such offenders are never tried on the municipal nor State level. Make such things a Federal crime with catastrophic prison sentences.

* Divide gun ownership into different classes - A,B,C,D, etc. - for different firearm categories, much driver's license categories

Stupid....we just have to keep the actual criminals who use guns for crimes locked up.....something that the democrat party refuses to do...if we just did that, our gun crime would dry up over night.

Stupid? Hardly. In how many Cities and Counties and States have semi-automatic or automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines been banned - in some instances successfully - in some instances unsuccessfully but the LibProgs keep trying?

Federal-level governing laws and the complete sidelining of States and Counties and Cities in this context, written in favor of Gun Rights issues, would have the very real and practical effect of setting aside LibProg gun-grabbing forevermore.

The Second has way too many holes in it, once opponents resort to INTERPRETATION rather than originalism - and they do.

* Devise appropriate licensure, training and other relevant requirements for each category of firearms

The democrat party used Literacy Tests to deny blacks the ability to exercise their Right to vote. Currently, the democrats across the country are using each one of those things to deny normal, law abiding people the ability to own and carry guns. This is nothing more than a desire to use red tape to deny a Right.

Then write relevant Federal Law so that there exists a very limited and narrow range of reasons why a license or transfer or transaction can be denied, to prevent the goddamned LibProgs from trying anything along those lines. Not difficult.

* Devise vigorous background checks (including mental health history red-flag check), Red-Flag Seizure procedures, etc.

We already have background checks. In a country of over 350 million people only 12 people in 2022 committed mass public shootings.....and most of them passed background checks for their guns. Criminals, again, do not go through background checks, they use straw buyers or steal their guns. Straw buyers can pass any background check.

Then strengthen the background checks and make them obligatory nationwide, overseen by the Federal government, so that everybody goes through the same vetting regardless of whether they're in Honolulu or Bangor or whatever.

* No licenses are issued nor firearms sold or transferred without a Federal Approval No. for the activity in question

Giving the democrat party the ability to simply deny licenses is exactly what they are dreaming about.......

Unless the laws are written in a rock-solid manner that clearly defines the Right and the very limited ability to deny.

* Crucify (metaphorically, anyway) people who kill or maim others using firearms in the commission of a crime

We can already do that, but the democrat party refuses to do it. The criminals shooting people have been arrested over and over again, and been released over and over again by democrat party judges, prosecutors and politicians. If we actually did stop the democrats from releasing these violent offenders who are doing 99% of all gun crime....our gun crime would drop about 99%....

The goddamned Democrats are dangerous in that regard., especially at the City, County and State levels.

By elevating such violations to the Federal level and trying them in Federal court you castrate the Dems at those levels.

Here's the REAL point...

Unless you intervene fairly quickly and boldly and substantively, through powerful legislation, they will continue grabbing for your guns until they DO get them.

However, if YOU beat 'em to the punch and craft Federal Law that (a) overcomes the worst abuses of ownership, licensure and transfer, and take the wind out of their sails and yet retain your rights from coast to coast, they'll toss in the towel.

Do that and yours will be the power and glory... a Preemptive Strike using their own tools against them; a delicious irony.

Fail to do that and you will be turning-in your firearms at some point in the next couple of decades, if they get their way.

I've just suggested a way - a SUSTAINABLE and UNASSAILABLE way - of fixing that and sidelining them on this forever.

Beat 'em to the punch... and get it set up YOUR way... in a way YOU can live with... while you still can.... the clock is running...

I am a (non-combat, wartime) veteran, hold a State FOID card, and am closer to being "on your side" in this matter than you know.

OK--so this year we have 18 school shootings, and it's not even March yet. Yesterday in Florida 15 young people with their entire lives in front of them, along with 2 school teachers trying to protect them were massacred. Then we have Las Vegas. Then a church in Texas were generations of family members were wiped out. We have a movie theatre in Aurora Colorado, then San Diego were a straw buyer purchased semi-automatics for a slaugther there, and Orlando, Florida another one. And Sandy Hook where 5 to 7 year olds were slaughtered.

People have called for better gun regulations in this country and it has continually fallen on deaf ears. Republicans are owned by the NRA and right wing gun extremists.

Here are my suggestions.
1. Ban semi-automatic weapons and 30 round gun clips.
2. People with existing semi-automatics & ammo be required to keep them in a locked secure gun case, and required to maintain an insurance liability policy on that weapon in order to keep them.
3. Parents of children & teenagers are required to keep all of their guns & ammo in locked secure gun safes, inaccessible at all times to their kids.
4. No private sales. If someone wants to sell their gun, it has to be dropped off at a licensed gun dealer for resale so a background check can be done.
5. Background checks including extended mental health checks before any purchase of a gun is made.
6. Straw buyers of guns, those who buy guns for others, be under the same prosecutable standards as those that pull the trigger.
7. Those that are on a no fly list, or FBI terrorist watch list not be able to purchase any guns or ammo.

If these simple regulations were in place--there would have never been a Las Vegas, a Sandy Hook, a Columbine massacre, a church in Texas, San Diego slaughter, Orlando, Florida massacre, a Virginia Tech etc. etc. etc., and 15 young kids and 2 teachers that were killed yesterday would be here today.

You won't convince Republicans to do any of this. They are OWNED by the NRA, and right wing gun extremists, and will fight (tooth & nail) on any new gun regulations. They are more interested in the donations they get from the NRA than keeping the public and our schools safe.

If you're tired of all the condolences & sympathies, then do something about it. Vote for Democrats in the midterm election cycle this coming November for common sense gun regulations.

Democrats are going to take over in 2018--and as soon as they're seated on January 19, 2019 they're going to be writing new gun regulations--and the semi automatic is going to be the main target. And they may very well require a liability insurance policy to keep a semi-automatic--or you'll end up just handing it over eventually.
