Why is this still a big thing in America ?

The terms are rarely used in the UK where the Communist Party and its various sub sets could all meet in a phone box.

There are no communist MPs or local Councillors and to all intents and purposes the whole thing died when the wall came down.

And yet I see someone like Mr Sanders described as a "Commie" when he is clearly a moderate socialist.

Is this some sort of hangover from the Macarthy era or have you guys discovered something that has eluded the rest of us ?

I am not really interested in dry definitions of communism or what Karl said to Groucho before the First World War.

In my political lexicon there are only three countries in the world that have a form of communism and in all three it is on the way out.

North Korea - bizarre personality cult that will die out when people get sick of being starved by a lunatic.

Cuba - Starbucks and Macdonalds will bring that experiment to an end peacefully.

China - State control will crumble when people decide that economic success isnt enough.

So is it a real thing or just a reaction to any form of state intervention ?

Communism is the way of governing where people are trying to set the Heaven on Earth on their own mind. That means, if you have the rules (theory), you get the right in using all means up to killing millions, cause who survives will live in perfect society. Untill that you can do ALL YOU WANT! So, bizarre cult or total exploitation of people are only options of different nations.

The key is - state your own rules, which are based on some theory, which is considered complete.

Russia didnt fail because of wealth redistribution.

it failed because of cultural marxsm.

How can a physicist succeed if he is sent to prison because less gifted women outsmart him in the cultural marxist game?

its not compicated to get, yankies.

Americans have problems with nuance and subtlety. Vocabulary often lacks as well. It is so easy to resort to simplistic formulas. There are no significant extremes of either right or left in the U.S., yet immediately someone is judged 'left wing' if he/she disagrees with someone considering him/herself to be what anyone else would call centrist or, at most, conservative.
It is part of the mildly anti-intellectual bent of American culture. All the possible shades of difference take too much thinking to process.

Oh, jeeze. Communism is the word to rile people up in the US. The government spent years with propaganda campaigns focused on the cold war and a nuclear war any day. These people are still alive.

Apparently the UK is lax in teaching about this. Communism is the ultimate objective and goal of Marxist Socialism. It's stated purpose is to facilitate the transition to Communism through control of the various components of power and resource.

The problem is, with the abysmal batting average for Communism, most modern Marxists must deceive us into believing they aren't Marxists. They invent new types of Socialism and make them sound like better ideas that have never been tried before. The ultimate objective and goal is masked and hidden because of the obvious shame in being associated with such a poor example.

Its always humorous when people play technicalities, and then grovel in their own BS before it is over lol.
Semantics FAIL
Socialist dictators are NOT commies

I call guno a commie. I know he isn't, but the word sounds better than "socialist dictator/mass genocide supporter". Ya get my point?

UK politics is generally soft left or soft right. Extremists at either end dont get much traction. You also have to remember that our heroic Russian allies stood with us against Hitler.

So Clinton/Obama/ Sanders would be considered just left of centre by a moderate democrat or conservative. But extreme commies by ,for example, a Trump fan ?

By 'normal' European standards, even Sanders, the 'most left' is about as left as Jospin in France was; maybe not even that much.
That said, his discourse does smack of the tired old 'socialist' jargon that not only has lost any charm, it also isn't what has worked very well. We need newer thinking, but definitely in the vein of what center left in Europe means. For Americans, that means a touch of Libertarian with the better parts of Conservatism to moderate fiscal policy.

America has always needed an enemy which could be used to scare citizens into line. Initially, we had the "savages" whose violent resistence to our appropriation of their land was proof of their diabolical nature. Very shortly thereafter we produced the truly terrifying threat of slave revolt. These real but sporatic attempts to shake off the chains of slavery in the Land of the Free stimulated ferocious counter measures (rebelling slaves were often burned alive) and justified the "peculiar institution" for centuries.

Fortunately, as the race threats petered out, the Great European Civil war supplied a replacement in the form of Kaiser Bill and Adolf Hitler. Communism, which had been the domestic replacement for internal threats by reds and blacks since the 1880s easily filled the gap created in 1945 and kept Americans suitably afraid until its collapse in 1990. The Arab menace makes a poor substitute. After all, those baddies don't have a navy or air force and we have to go over there where they can shoot us in order to get hurt.

Communism presents a real threat. Not Uncle Joe and his gulag but Bernie Sanders and his $15/hr minimum wage and free tuition ideas. Lacking anything better, you go with the devil you know. That's America.

Cold War Mentality that has been passed on to the following generation.

Sanders is a Socialist and not a real Communist.

For one to understand this topic, one would need to remember that the USA was founded to free ourselves from the European model. Therefore, most, if not everything, that comes out of Erope (politically speaking), is looked at with a certain scorn (at least historically). It's more of a cultural thing than anything else, IMHO. To most Americans there is really little difference between the two, and both are seen as failed, well by those that are not on the American Left at least. True, there are aspects of both that have been proven sucesses, even here in the USA, however, as a whole, both schools of thought have been rejected.

Now to the real question. More often than not, both labels are thrown out (as are Facist, Anarcist, right/left wing nut job, Racist, Sexist, Bigot, Homophobe, ect.) as a means to put an opponent on the defensive. All of the above "charges" are completely impossible to dis-prove, but often times one feels the need to try anyway. It is a tactic that has been emplyed by both sides of the political aisle, to great sucess. If you can sucessfully plant the seed that your opponent MAY be a Commie, Marxist, Sexist, Homophobe, ect. you have already won half the battle. The other half, proving you are not one, is relatively easy, sense you leveled the charge first. Everything your opponent says to attack you looks more and more like the guilty trying to shift the focus.

Agree to a certain point.
But mainly I see labels attached to politicians, for example, on the basis of their actions, policies and speeches.

So if a politician says:
"We are gonna string up a few Muslims and make the country Christian again" - .we can pretty much place him on the spectrum.

Similarly if a politician says:
"Society needs to help the weak and the old and the sick. Nobody should be left behind" - we pretty much know where he, or she, stands.

And then you get one who says BOTH and they become a Populist Nationalist.

Okay, let me ask you something straight up... Do you believe that conservative right-wingers actually don't want to help the weak, old and sick and want to leave people behind?

I can assure you, this is a sign you may have become brainwashed. Somewhere, at some point, someone has convinced you that the Conservative right is something it is not... never has been, never will be.

It is that we have a different approach to solving the problems. We believe our way works best. You can certainly disagree and we can have a debate about our ideas versus your ideas... but to try and claim that you have the exclusive on helping people and we're only concerned with ourselves, is quite the insult.

Bernie is a commie, Hellary is a socialist whore, Donald is a power hungry orange clown, and I would give 5 to 1 odds that one will be the next POTUS.
