There was always a morning newspaper on the breakfast table when I was a kid.
Of course we made a straight shot to the comics.

Dick Tracy, Tank MacNamara, Mac Divot, Peanuts, Popeye, etc.
And yes, Brenda Starr.

But today, to me, these are the standouts.

Illustrated humor, with or without writing- often achieved in these strips- had given and still gives such insight into the human and natural world. Often in juxtaposition, often in concert... but most often humorous.

For some reason the one where Steve Dallas has Opus Croakus tie him up in an attempt to quit smoking has stayed with me:

Steve: "Ok Opus, no matter what I say, don't untie me and don't give me cigarette"
Opus: "Alright".

Mere seconds later...

Steve: "Opus, give me a cigarette before I kill you!"
Opus: Looks at his watch; "2 minutes Steve... yer doin' fine!"
