Come on Republicans, would you let your Daughter marry this guy?

that maybe this pregnancy was no accident?

Palin's daughter is a minor and her mother is against sex-education in the schools but we can't assume that she's uninformed or just plain stupid. With 4 siblings, she has to know the consequences of sex. There's all kinds of information around about birth control.

Maybe there was a little rebellion in the mix. You have to admit that Mom is a little out of the reality loop when it comes to teen sex.

Maybe with Mom being so high profiled and busy, daughter wanted some celebrity of her own.

Or... maybe the damned rubber broke and it was an accident.

Personally, I don't think there are very many "accidental" pregnancies.

He's an 18 year old kid. I'm not going to hold that against him, nor do I think we should care who young Ms. Palen marries. It's tough enough being a 17 year old kid with a baby without having a bunch of media attention. Fortunately for her, she's going to have a lot more support and financial help than most 17 year olds in the same position.

My problem is Sarah Palen's extremist ideology on families, pregnancy and sex ed. She promotes abstinence only education, and cut funding for shelters and job training programs for pregnant teen girls.

Fuck that.

Being in support of Abstinence only program DOES NOT MEAN that there will be no comprehensive sex ed program ALSO available.

27 states have an Abstinence program now, at one time 48 states participated in one, so that they could draw extra federal funds for such.

Alaska IS NOT ONE OF THEM and Alaska HAD a Comprehensive Sex Ed program IN PLACE that taught birth control when BOTH her daughter and the boyfriend took it.

For 2009 fiscal year, Alaska has applied for the Federal Funds for an Abstinence only program....

i think people are misunderstanding the ONLY in the Abstinence only program....the ONLY stands for it being the ONLY way that one can be certain not to get pregnant and be certain not to get VD....

The ONLY does not stand for it being the ONLY sex ed program the school provides.

I read that Palin is against the "Explicit Sex ed" program which is much more graphic and requires the teaching of homosexuality and masturbation and other things to elementary kids, and this program is not accepted by most parents when polled....this is not the same program as Comprehensive sex ed.

just to clear things up for some....

Yes... she's an extremist. But the girl should really be left out of it. The problem is that's what happens to kids whose parents shove them into the public eye whether it's Bristol Palin or Jamie Lynn Spears. Also, the problem with Bristol is that she illustrates the problem with abstinence only education.

I'm not sure how you substantiate that. Abstinence only means that's all they teach as a means of birth control. They DO NOT teach about condoms. They do not teach about birth control or safe sex. That's the whole point of Abstinence Only programs.

If Abstinence Only were as you describe, then NYC has an abstinence only program... and I think we all know that's not the case.

let me try to find the link that i read this on the other day, and see if it can clear this up.....i could have read it wrong...?

regardless, her daughter and the bf, went through comprehensive sex ed, and she got pregnant....

her daughter did not go through Abstinence only program because her state does not have one, and then got pregnant as some want to make it out as so....

Palen was asked her position on sex education, in her run for Governor in 2006:

Question: Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?

S.Palen: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.

and the words from his mouth.

On his MySpace page, Johnston boasts, “I’m a f….in’ redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s… and just f…in’ chillin’, I guess. Ya f… with me I’ll kick ass.” He also claims to be “in a relationship” but states, “I don’t want kids.”
Come on, he sounds like a typical Republican teenager. Last time I checked, they are still allowed to procreate. I'm working on legislation to rectify that situation, though.

YES and most of Americans DO NOT SUPPORT, the Explicit Sexusal Education Program, Which is different than Comprehensive sexual Ed, where birth control is taught, i explained this above already....

I am not a McCain for President Supporter.....

just trying to clear up some of this SPIN....

and i don't know if Palin is ALSO against Comprehensive Sex Ed, which is NOT Explicit sex ed...but most Americans ARE AGAINST EXPLICIT SEX ED being taught in grades 1-12.

It's quite possible Palin herself doesn't know how babies get formed. She might have told her kids you can get pregnant from sitting on a public toilet.

Heh Jillian
This isn't the article i was reading the other day, but it CLEARLY SHOWS that you can have BOTH programs in your schools and still collect the Federal funds for such, it is up to the state....

And Abstinence ONLY stands for the programs original name, i just read, which was Abstinence Only Until Marriage, program....

States Rejecting "Abstinence-Only" Funding

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS) In the sexually-charged world of teenagers, it can be tough to just say, "no."

"It's difficult to really be abstinent until marriage because it's a lot of different things pulling at you when you're a teenager," 16-year-old Kristen Brown explains.

CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports the forces pulling at America's teens include the tribulations of idols and icons from pop-culture; like the recent news that Britney Spears' 16-year old sister is pregnant.

All those influences have driven Congress and the Bush administration to push "abstinence-only" education. The government has provided states a billion dollars during the past decade for abstinence-only programs.

But many say it just doesn't work, and they point to the teen birth rate's first rise in 15 years as proof.

A growing number of states are taking a stand and actually rejecting federal abstinence-only funds, reports Attkisson. New Mexico just became the 15th.

"The governors are saying; 'Even if this administration is going to continue to push abstinence-only, we in the states are going to do the right thing by teens and actually give them the information they need to actually prevent an unintended pregnancy,'" said Cecile Richards, the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

No state requires abstinence-only education in school. The federal money they're giving up is for outside groups to promote abstinence. Giving up the funds is more of a symbolic gesture by governors who believe kids need to know about birth control too.

Attkisson says the states are split as to exactly what they want taught in schools; Fourteen require both abstinence and contraception be taught in sex ed. Nineteen states only require abstinence, but contraception may be taught. Seventeen states don't tell their local school boards what to do.

Those who want teens to wait to have sex are upset that so many states are rejecting the federal abstinence funds.

"I think they're the victims of a huge lobbying effort on behalf of the contraception education proponents, who truly do not want abstinence education to exist," says Elayne Bennett, of the Best Friends Foundation.

But as the adults passionately debate their kids' private lives, the teens themselves are left to wrestle with the pressures and problems of young life.

"So many people have had sex and had sexual experiences, so you sort of feel left out," says Kristen.

I know what sexually explicit means. I don't know what is meant by sexually explicit sex ed. I seriously doubt any school teaches it. Sounds like more hysteria from the right.

Oh, sorry I read that wrong then.

I seriously doubt any school might teach grades 1-9 explicit sex ed. I've never heard of any schools myself teaching such a thing.

Right.

I've never heard of "sexually explicit" sex education until today. Sounds like the word "explicit" is rightwing code word. That questionaire to palin was from a rightwing newspaper.

I doubt there's any schools that show pornography to teenagers, as part of any credible sex ed program.

Sarah Palen explicity said "yes" if she favors abstinence until marriage sex ed, and she oppossed free condoms and clinics for teenagers.

i think it's anything considered to be too explicit like the whole demonstrating the condom on the banana thing vs just telling them to use a condom.

It varies widely from school to school, experts say, though a growing body of science suggests a comprehensive approach might work best.

The pregnancy of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's teenage daughter has rekindled the debate over what -- or whether -- schools should teach kids about sex.

It's unclear what sex education Bristol Palin, 17, received in her Alaska school. The campaign did not answer questions about the issue, although a spokesman for Palin said Friday the Alaska governor "supports teaching abstinence alongside sex education."
