Code violations for 8 years; nobody said a word for fear of offending the Oakland 'artists'?

Ridgerunner, that's a good point. Pitiful shape we are in today and it is a shame. Those at the top set the example, good or bad. However, we are to continue to act in ethical manors regardless of what our ever changing officials do.

It was known as the Ghost Ship, a large, gray-walled warehouse with a skull and other artwork painted on the outside and chock-full of hand-built spaces tailored for musicians and artisans.

But over the past decade, the 4,000-square-foot structure at 1305 31st Ave. was better known to city zoning and fire officials as a source of complaints about illegal residential uses, all-night dance parties and general blight.

The complaints came to light Saturday as Oakland officials grappled to answer questions about a blaze that took at least nine lives. The building is zoned as a warehouse, which does not allow for residential uses. Darin Ranelletti, interim director of the city Planning and Building Department, said the warehouse was under investigation to determine whether it was being illegally used for housing.

“We had reports that people were living there, but we’re still trying to confirm them,” said Ranelletti, who also said the party that took place Friday required a permit, which was not obtained.

Bravo libs, no really. The intelligence of the left is just overwhelming.

I lived in Lafayette California in '89. I guess I was about 13 or so. Anyway, a summer day would likely involve a mix of cab/BART to San Francisco where we would gorge our selves on clown alley hot dogs and burgers followed by a trip to Oakland to explore the derelict buildings. That town has always had allot of those and they have always been an issue.

Looks like someone is going to get the shit sued out of them.

It's amazing (IMHO) how that who ever it is that owns these properties, are not expected to follow codes after violations are reported or should have been reported. They should either follow the codes or have their properties condemned, and after that taken if they can't comply within 6 months of the written report or after violations are documented and reported 6 months prior.
How do you know anyone owned this property. It looks like it was abandoned and taken over by homeless squatters.
. Someone owns all properties whether it is the state, the city, old money etc. Most properties are owned by citizens, and if the city ends up with property, it then auctions the property off to citizens who might try to develope the property for themselves or resale it for a profit. Alot of property is owned by slum Lords, old money/old citizens who have had it for years and years. These people are usually given breaks due to being grandfathered in, and that means that they in many cases don't have to comply with changes when they are made in some new codes or they are given an extended time period to comply, but one only hopes that the clause doesn't include things pertaining to the up grading of safety. I have seen buildings empty and falling down, but somehow they stay like that for years ???? Give me a break... So are you offended that someone is talking about things that are also a factor in these cases maybe ???
Some properties are simply abandoned. Some properties are owned but closed. They are taken over by squatters. Drug addicts, the homeless, criminals hide out in derelict properties.

I am not offended by anything, least of all the fire. They were druggies too sotted to find a way out. Too drugged up to realize that a makeshift stairway made of wooden pallets would burn quickly. They got what they wanted, drugs, booze, and a place to hide.

This is where government steps in and does something with the building.

Liberals don't seem to understand that the role of government is greater than wealth redistribution and identity politics.

Oh so now conservatives love endless regulation?

Derp Derp Derp

Progressives deciding which laws to enforce and which to ignore go on all the time. If you want an eye opener look into how often these Dem run big cities allow raw untreated human sewage to spill into public water ways due to their crumbling sewage systems. The government agencies look the other way. In Portland, OR they routinely tell the public not to enter/swim in the main river due to this. This has been going on for decades. Instead of fixing their 100 plus year old sewer system the libs in Portland spend billions on light rail pretending to be Europe.

Now image if a corporation spilled something into the river, even a small spill. It would be front page news with calls for arrests and fines they would freak out.

It Trump was the owner, oh boy, they'd be calling for him to be charged for wrongful death.

Not endless, but specific regulations. The libs were for regulating the air pressure in your child's bicycle tires if they thought it was causing the child's legs to get to strong. They hate anything strong you know... LOL.

See what happens when you have the far left in charge!
. Not sure whose responsible, but it's going on all over this nation. Now the allowance of these places to be used by vagrants could be a liberal thing for sure, but the building codes violations is the owners responsibility.. Not sure what the titles of the owners would fall under be it liberal or conservative..... Where are the illegals staying in these so called sanctuary cities one wonders ??

California is far left, Oakland is far left so it is the far left that was in charge and for 8 years did nothing to protect the people!

. Thanks, and yet the building blight along with code violations are rampant all over the nation. Some cities are getting way more strict about it, but like you say about the libs, if they are behind the problem in an area, then God help us all in that area, because you wouldn't be able to touch it without being called a (heartless individual or criminal) that you would condem a possible shelter to house the illegals or whatever.

We only have one abandoned building downtown, been a source of contention for ... decades really, as long as I can remember.

It's filled with asbestos so the costs to tear it down are outrageous. The city and the owner's are constantly in and out of court over this or that. The latest was that the city was demanding the building be brought up to fire code, the owners stated they can't do that because it doesn't have water service anymore, blah blah blah. It goes back and forth and it's a dead end because the owners want a shit ton for the property (they refuse to take a loss on it) and the city can't really enforce the rules because the buildings been around since the 50s so they argue "grandfather" rights (Alaska is very big on owner property rights so they often win.) Its complete loggerheads and no one makes any progress one way or the other. The owners feel the city is persecuting them, the city feels the place is a death trap - both are right. It's kind of stupid, but the law and constitutional protections mean it's how it's going to be. Every couple years or so they have a court case and the state will win or lose some point - the last one was that the owners had to do a better job fencing the building off from homeless folks and the owners didn't have to run water to the place. I think it's going to go back and forth until the entire owners family kicks the bucket...

So did you just make all that up?

I posted on another thread there had been HUNDREDS of complaints sent to the City. The LIB run City did fuck all about the complaints. Every complaint went into 'file thirteen' by order of officials at City Hall.
Guess what?
When the millions of tax dollars are spent settling the lawsuits there WILL be at least a dozen CITY officials charged with first degree manslaughter.
The charges are already being drawn up.
I spoke to a friend in LE in Oakland and was told as many as fifty City employees are going to be named.
I have been told there are already a number of City employees who are lining up to 'roll' on their fellow employees. There is going to be literally blood on the walls in City Hall when this is over.
