It was known as the Ghost Ship, a large, gray-walled warehouse with a skull and other artwork painted on the outside and chock-full of hand-built spaces tailored for musicians and artisans.

But over the past decade, the 4,000-square-foot structure at 1305 31st Ave. was better known to city zoning and fire officials as a source of complaints about illegal residential uses, all-night dance parties and general blight.

The complaints came to light Saturday as Oakland officials grappled to answer questions about a blaze that took at least nine lives. The building is zoned as a warehouse, which does not allow for residential uses. Darin Ranelletti, interim director of the city Planning and Building Department, said the warehouse was under investigation to determine whether it was being illegally used for housing.

“We had reports that people were living there, but we’re still trying to confirm them,” said Ranelletti, who also said the party that took place Friday required a permit, which was not obtained.

Bravo libs, no really. The intelligence of the left is just overwhelming.

They have old hotels around here that are a hazard, yet no one uses them but it does violate codes in the city....

It's amazing (IMHO) how that who ever it is that owns these properties, are not expected to follow codes after violations are reported or should have been reported. They should either follow the codes or have their properties condemned, and after that taken if they can't comply within 6 months of the written report or after violations are documented and reported 6 months prior.

Unfortunately for the Oakland authorities, enforcing ordnances, zoning laws, and fire regulations are the job of the government. Turning a blind eye to the illegal residents and failure of performing duties and poor management decisions or lack of, has resulted in a loss of life that would find you and I guilt of involuntarily manslaughter.

. Sad it goes on in so many cities and towns across the nation, but old money as we call it, gets the break, and somehow is above the law. Time to get more strict in this country when it comes to codes etc. and to find people who aren't afraid to enforce the law, and aren't afraid to enforce it against old money who thinks that it has grown to become above the law. Trump run on the platform of law and order, so let's see how it all goes in that to include all law breakers equally.

How do you know anyone owned this property. It looks like it was abandoned and taken over by homeless squatters.

. Someone owns all properties whether it is the state, the city, old money etc. Most properties are owned by citizens, and if the city ends up with property, it then auctions the property off to citizens who might try to develope the property for themselves or resale it for a profit. Alot of property is owned by slum Lords, old money/old citizens who have had it for years and years. These people are usually given breaks due to being grandfathered in, and that means that they in many cases don't have to comply with changes when they are made in some new codes or they are given an extended time period to comply, but one only hopes that the clause doesn't include things pertaining to the up grading of safety. I have seen buildings empty and falling down, but somehow they stay like that for years ???? Give me a break... So are you offended that someone is talking about things that are also a factor in these cases maybe ???
