Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) thinks it’s time America’s millionaires pay their fair share.

And in a new report — titled “Subsidizing the Rich and Famous” — Coburn makes an argument for closing loopholes for millionaires. “From tax write-offs for gambling losses, vacation homes, and luxury yachts to subsidies for their ranches and estates, the government is subsidizing the lifestyles of the rich and famous,” Coburn writes in the report. “This welfare for the well-off — costing billions of dollars a year — is being paid for with the taxes of the less fortunate, many who are working two jobs just to make ends meet, and IOUs to be paid off by future generations.”

In total, Coburn’s report claims that millionaires receive $30 billion in benefits from tax giveaways and federal grant programs every year. Almost 1,500 millionaires didn’t pay income tax in 2009, according to the report. The report further breaks down the numbers: $74 million of unemployment checks, $316 million in farm subsidies and $16 million in government-backed loans for college

And from a LA Times article:
"Among the most egregious offenses of "reverse Robin Hood" handouts: $20.8 million in unemployment insurance paid to millionaires in 2009; $16.4 million in subsidized student loans for millionaire college students from 2007 to 2010; $27.7 billion in mortgage interest deductions for millionaires".

I have seen many a post describing those who live in poverty, working Americans that don't make enough in wages to pay taxes, the unemployed and others using government programs as leeches. Well it appears we have the top percentile also living off the government!

I'm with Coburn, this welfare to the wealthy has to stop and the same goes for corporate welfare to highly profitable companies.

Discuss.

Americans are the richest 5% of the world. We are all the well-off.

Hence, we should end welfare/subsidies, etc for everyone.

Let's get back to what America really means: Liberty to choose your own destiny.

I think that Senator Coburn realizes the depth that the subjects brought up by the OWS people are resonating with the American Public, and wants to be on the right side as this comes down on November 2012.

WASHINGTON -- Millionaires are receiving billions in taxpayer-funded support every year that helps them pay for everything from child care to bad debts to boats and vacation homes, according to a report released Monday by Sen. Tom Coburn.

People who individually earned more than a million dollars in 2009 even managed to collect a total of nearly $21 million in unemployment insurance.

"From tax write-offs for gambling losses, vacation homes, and luxury yachts to subsidies for their ranches and estates, the government is subsidizing the lifestyles of the rich and famous," wrote Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, in an accompanying letter. "Multimillionaires are even receiving government checks for not working. This welfare for the well-off -- costing billions of dollars a year -- is being paid for with the taxes of the less fortunate."

Calling the giveaways "sheer Washington stupidity," Coburn detailed in the study more than $30 billion a year that comes out of the U.S. Treasury to aid people who make more than a million a year.

$30 billion eh? Gosh, that's like 7 days of federal expenditures. Problem solved!

That said, if we're going to have an income tax, I agree we should eliminate all the tax loopholes and make EVERYONE pay.

Is this the Tom Coburn that wants to cut veterans healthcare benefits?

Yep, Sen. Tom Coburn was half right.
Let's end it for the wealthy and poor alike.

Strange statements from Colburn. Maybe he's switching parties.

And why would that be when Conservatives have long opposed government handouts for everyone?

Yes they have opposed them for everyone. But not for their select supporters.
Ie tax breaks for big oil?
Tax breaks for hedge fund managers?

There are no tax breaks for big oil that are exclusively for them. They take advantage of the tax breaks available to everyone in the tax code.

However, tax breaks aren't hand outs, welfare, nor a subsidy. So it's a moot point.

Tax breaks are hand outs when you figure the bottom line.
Playing semantics again?

The Bible has well over 100 passages telling us to help the poor. To read those passages go to this link:
Bible: Caring for and serving the poor

The GOP House took the time to reaffirm the US motto "In God We Trust". Most of those who cry and moan about helping the poor are conservatives who support the GOP and also claim to be good church going Christians. Maybe, instead of whining about helping those in need, they should heed to the Bible and follow their leaders to the point of "In God We Trust", instead of openly contradicting the Word of God by their actions.

Helping the poor should never be a partisan issue because it's a Christian issue because God told us to take care of the needy.

Does the Bible say it's okay to steal from some in order to give to others? Or, does it say Christians should be charitable? Helping the poor should never be a partisan issue because helping the poor is not a role for government, it is a role for charity, religious or otherwise. We have no national religion, in case you've forgotten that.

And then there's that pesky law of the land in which you'll find no authority allowing the federal government to give money to the poor.

Gosh, you're argument is falling apart quickly.
