Let me spend a few moments explaining to liberals what is obvious to millions of Trump supporters.
For over 200 years our country has welcomed immigrants of all kinds (setting aside slavery), and immigrants have been flooding here because we are the #1 country in the world.
Trump and his base are really saying they want to put an end to immigration as we have known it for 200 years; a complete overhaul to the immigration policy, make immigration available only to a select group of qualified people. Going forward think of the USA as an exclusive country club, where people are automatically accepted if their parents are members, otherwise the bar is set very high for anyone wanting to join Club USA.
Another way of explaining it. The USA is like an ivy league university (Yale, Stanford, etc), but the bar for entry is low like a community college that accepts everybody. Trump is proposing indirectly that because the USA is in the IVY league of countries (#1), the bar for acceptance should only be ivy league people from other countries, and reject everybody who is below a very high bar.
Yes, this means rejecting people of low income, minorities, refugees, and religions. Trump and his base don't believe diversity is healthy, they believe just the opposite, that diversity is harmful to the country, therefore overhauling immigration policy should also not promote diversity.
Why is this good or bad?
