When the world faced tyranny in the 1940s it was every able bodied American's duty to join the fight to defeat one of the greatest threats the world has ever seen.

It is every American's civic duty to sacrifice their time to uphold the justice system, when one is called upon to serve in a jury.

It is every American's civic duty to pay taxes for public services such as defense, education, police and fire departments.

Why should it not be every American's civic duty to aide in the fight on disease, the fight on sickness, the fight on unnecessary death?

Dear JS:
I agree, and urge you to fight this battle better by joining forces to enforce common Constitutional principles, instead of violating them and fueling divisive conflict instead.

Advocates "left and right" are fighting against this atrocious bill corrupted by private interests. Instead of "offering a public option" it MANDATES private insurance, without covering all people but penalizing people unequally, by forcing honest service providers and taxpayers to take on burdens and losses beyond our means, while those who are dishonest and in it for greed will still benefit. This is a step backward; either opponents set it up to fail, or proponents passed a flawed version to politically force better solutions. As it is, the bill is arguably unconstitutional (it is only constitutional if people consent to its mandates freely, whereas a growing majority on both sides do not but oppose the individual mandates and tax penalties that go against their goals and principles).

As for fighting disease and death, the most effective methods I know involve FREE spiritual healing which cuts the cost of cancer, criminal illness, addiction, abuse and other diseases where the health care measures would waste billions of dollars trying to placate symptoms. These methods, ranging from Christian healing prayer to remove the cause of sickness, depression, addictions and even demonic voices, to AA recovery and Buddhist therapy, all rely on voluntary choice; and cannot be legislated or mandated by federal government. Health care and teaching hospitals and internships could better be funded by reforming the wasteful criminal justice system, instead of charging more debts to taxpayers. The IRS and feds could seek restitution from corporate abuses of public money, instead of going after law-abiding citizens fined for not wanting to buy health insurance.

So yes, I agree with you it IS a shared public duty to provide free and equal access and protection for all people. Unfortunately this bill not only fails to do that, but also obstructs that process further, by mandating contradictory laws that induce hostile opposition and waste time, money, and resources to correct and amend. The true solutions and best programs I have found are all run by free choice instead of regulation by government.

Examples of successful programs and models already in the free market:
* The Nurturing Network The Nurturing Network
* USAA insurance company that testified before Congress as an exemplary top rated service that did not require federal regulation to serve its membership
* Amica Mutual and other Christian/nonprofit health insurance programs
Christians rely on each other to pay medical bills | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
None of these require federal regulation in order to operate.
The common factor in accountability is LOCAL control, not centralized bureaucracy.

Other sources:
* "Healing" by Francis MacNutt Christian Healing Ministries
includes a medical case studies of rheumatoid arthritis healed FREE by individual and team prayer in order to eliminate the cost of medication prescriptions that only reduced the pain
(also includes a case of schizophrenia healed after wasting 12 years in the mental health system)
* "Glimpses of the Devil" by Scott Peck
documents 2 cases of schizophrenia and demonic personalities that could not be treated until Peck applied deliverance and exorcism methods that he recommended for professional research and development as part of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment
* Olivia Reiner 713-829-0899
has 30 years experience in the MD Cancer Center in Houston, curing cases of cancer, diabetes, multiple personalities, addictions, and sexual/homosexual abuse through spiritual prayer for forgiveness, to break generational curses, and to cast out demonic voices
(all for free, though she works alongside professional medical doctors and treatments)
* Brian Weiss, author on books using past-life regression therapy to cure phobias etc.
* Dr. Daniel Amen, "Change your brain, change your life"
has developed brain scan technology that can show the differences in brain function
before and after people are healed of depression or other mental and chemical imbalance

Let me see if I can help you out. "Civic duties" are the responsibilities of a citizen. They are, essentially, the responsibilities conferred upon us in connection with the rights and privileges we enjoy as citizens. In the words of John D. Rockefeller, "Every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty." So our duty to participate in national defense is incumbent upon all of us because we communally enjoy the right of the protection of that national defense. Our duty to participate in jury duty if we are called is incumbent upon us because we communally enjoy the protection of our law enforcement and justice systems. We have a civic duty to pay taxes because of the communal services we all use which are paid for by those taxes.

Now, please tell me what right we have as citizens or service we communally use and enjoy that would convey upon us the responsibility to pay for individual healthcare services?
