Merry Xmas

The story of the song.
Written in 1941, this Christmas carol, inspired by a twentieth century Czech lullaby, The Little Drummer Boy, is the work of a teacher, also a composer of classical music, named Katherine K. Davis. Originally, it bore the title of Carol of the Drum, and was intended for an amateur choir, consisting only of young girls. Recorded for the very first time in 1955 by The Trapp Family Singers, it was not until the release of the 1958 Harry Simeone Choir that the song finally became a hit.
The Little Drummer Boy is of Christian origin, and the lyrics contained in the song are proof of this. They tell the story of a young boy, from a disadvantaged background, summoned by the magi to go to the cradle of Jesus, the day of the Nativity. Unable to offer a gift, he played his drum throughout his journey, in the hope that the Virgin Mary approves of his approach. In addition, the story is strangely similar to a 12th century legend, "The Juggler of Our Lady", told by Anatole France, which was later adapted into an opera in 1902.
Since its first broadcast, The Little Drummer Boy became very popular, and appeared on the American charts, a success that continued for four consecutive years, from 1958 to 1962. Subsequently, it was reissued and endisqué by many well-known artists , such as Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, Johnny Mathis, Andy William, Marlene Dietrich and Stevie Wonder. It was then translated into French under the title of "The Child with the Drum", and again, many singers lent him their voice.
