The reason for their anger is a recent judgment by Malaysia's High Court that the word Allah is not exclusive to Muslims. Judge Lau Bee Lan ruled that others, including Catholics who had been prohibited by the Home Ministry from using the word in their publications since 2007, can now use the term. She also rescinded the prohibition order freeing the Malay language–edition of the Catholic monthly The Herald to use Allah to denote the Christian God. After widespread protests, however, the judge granted a stay order on Jan. 7. The same day the government appealed to the higher court of appeal to overturn the ruling.

The anger seemingly turned violent late Thursday night after masked men on motorcycles firebombed three churches in the city, gutting the ground floor of the Metro Tabernacle Church located in a commercial building in the Desa Melawati suburb of the capital. The attacks, which police said appeared uncoordinated, were condemned by the government, opposition MPs and Muslim clerics alike. On Friday Muslims demonstrated in scores of mosques across the country but the protest was peaceful. In the mosque in Kampung Baru, a Malay enclave in the city, Muslims held placards that read "Leave Islam Alone! Treat Us As You Would Treat Yourself! Don't Test Our Patience!" This, amid cries of "Allah is Great!" (See pictures of Islam's soft revolution in Cairo.)

Because of its ethnic makeup, religion is a sensitive issue in Malaysia and any religious controversy is seen as a potential spark for public unrest. Some 60% of Malaysia's 28 million people are Malay Muslim, while the rest are ethnic Chinese, Indians and indigenous tribes, practicing various faiths including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and animism. Among Christians, the majority Catholics number about 650,000, or 3% of the population. Despite Malaysia's diverse national complexion, political Islam is a growing force and the country operates under two sets of laws, one for Muslims, the other for everyone else. The authorities regard such compartmentalization as essential to maintaining social stability.

To many Malay Muslims, Judge Lau's ruling crosses that line. Prominent Muslim clerics, lawmakers and government ministers have questioned the soundness of the judgment. A coalition of 27 Muslim NGOs wrote to the nine Malay sultans, who are each head of Islam in their respective states, to intervene and help overturn the verdict. A Facebook campaign by Muslims started on Jan. 4 has attracted over 100,000 supporters. Among them: Deputy Trade Minister Mukhriz Mahathir, son of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who also waded into the controversy saying the court is not a proper forum to decide on an emotive religious issue. "The judgment is a mistake," says Nazri Aziz, Minister overseeing Parliamentary Affairs, speaking for many Malaysian Muslims. The few Muslims who have urged respect for judicial independence have been shouted down as "traitors." "I can't understand how any Muslim can support this judgment," said legislator Zulkifli Noordin in a statement.

Indonesian Muslims and Christians Argue over Allah - TIME

First, it was Mohamed and now it's allah. WTF people, is their religion so insecure that they can't let others even talk about their pagan diety?

dude. you worship the same entity. We've gone over this time and again. It's no different than you using "god"

Actually, allah (may his name forever be a curse......ptooie) is an Egyptian diety.

See, when Abraham and Sarah came through Egypt, the king tried to get Abraham to give him his wife, but, when the king found out Sarah was Abraham's wife and it would have been a sin for him to take Sarah, he gave them a handmaiden for Sarah.

Her name was Hagar, who was the woman who gave birth to Ishmael, who was Mohamed's ancestor.

When Hagar was kicked out of the tribe, Hagar and Ishmael went across the desert, and, when they were almost ready to give up, it states that Hagar hid Ishmael in some bushes (remember, by this time he was a teenager), while she went to pray.

Now, with Ishmael being Abraham's son, Ishmael would know who HaShem is, but probably not the other one, because his mother hid away from his sight while praying.

Probably because she knew that Ishmael would kill her for praying to someone other than HaShem.

And no........Yeshua (Jesus) isn't HaShem (God) either. Yeshua is His son.

Actually, dude...........it's in the Old Testament (better known as the Torah), as well as in the Tanach.

Might wanna study something sometime. You'll learn stuff.

That's not what they are objecting to. They are objecting to the Catholics calling the Christian god Allah which is what they do in Catholic services and etc in Indonesia. Apparently Allah just means god in general in Indonesian languages and since the Catholic Church gives services in the vernacular, "God" is translated as "Allah". Apparently Arab Christians also call god allag because in Arabic Allah means god just as in French Dieu means God.

This issue is just another example of how ridiculous religious people are all over the world.

I'm surprised that you, the Muslim hater, is not all up in arms yourself that some Christians call God Allah.

:popcorn:Are we going to see muslims fight Christians now--the Christian denomination fight of yesterday was too lame for words!!

Speaking of names , the name Yahweh comes from the name of a Midian god whose name is believed to have been pronounced 'Yahoo".

Seriously, Biker.. it's stuff like this which makes it so easy. SO easy.

So what exactly are Christians supposed to call God in Arabic? Allah is merely the Arabic derivative of Hebrew word Elohiem, which of course is the Hebrew word for God. And it's not like God is giving us any other name to call Him lately. So what word should they use? It makes no sense.

dude. you worship the same entity. We've gone over this time and again. It's no different than you using "god"

The god of the Muslims is not the same God as the Christian God. It is all about a name. I have never used nor heard Allah used in any churches I have been in. Why start now?

The God of the Muslims, the God of the Hebrew, the God of the Jew, the God of the Christian are all the God of Abraham. The one and same GOD. No matter what you call him/her/it.

That is true.
I was reading earlier somewhere else that the Arabic word for God, Allah, comes from a Hebrew word for God.

If christians can't say "allah" any more, how are christian kids going to play that game when they yell, "Allah, allah, allah - all home free?" Major bummer for the kiddies... Guess only non-christian kids can play that game now. Too bad. Just another day in America where it really sucks to be a christian.

:cuckoo:

You may want to note that I said nothing about the word used that names God of a god. I was talking about the intity who is God. Christians and Muslims do not worship the same God. No matter what name they give Him.

Gee Ollie, you're wrong. Interesting how much it happens, eh?

No. Not all are the same "god". Why? Simple..............first off, it started with the Romans who bastardized Christianity because they wanted to appease the pagans so that they would believe in THEIR VERSION of "god". (I use lower case to denote the difference between the entity and the word that represents Him.)

And..........a couple of centuries after Christianity grew a following, the musLAMES, (whose ancestor was a dude named Ishmael), saw what was happening with the God of Abraham.

They wanted a piece of the pie.

So what did they do? Went back to the teachings of Ishmael's mother (Hagar), who happened to be an Egyptian princess.

They started a new "religion" to take over the previous ones. But......just like anything else, the world is not black and white. It has colors.

Everyone understands God in their own way. When His Holiness the Dali Lama was asked how many religions he thought should exists? He stated as many as there are people on the Earth, as we all understand God in our own way.

I mean............do you understand everyone who you meet? If so, you've got the one true religion.

If not, tell people what works for you and show them how you came to that conclusion.
