Christians attempt to silence non-religious messages at Christmas

I would like to add that a Christian church from kansas now wants to put of a display saying Santa will take you to hell in the same place the atheist sign was posted which was also stolen last week but found.

Eye on Olympia: Controversial Kansas "church" wants to erect "Santa Claus will take you to hell" sign at capitol...

The WestBorough Baptist Church?

I thought we've all agreed that those people are freaking nuts and deserve no respect.

I doubt they'd put up a sign that implies Santa will rape children though.

They put in a request but it didn't sound like the state will let them!

Freedom of speech, really? You're a proponent?

Atheists are entitled to equal rights.

Of course they are assuming your equal rights reference is to the first amendment.

And equal expression.

Of course they are.

After paging thru this thread I have come to the conclusion that a mass stupid attack is in progress.

Pay attention.

  • A Nativity scene on .gov property is not an endorsement of any religion. And, it doesn't send any message about going to hell.
  • The atheist sign is not hate speech.
  • Theft of the sign is not suppression of free speech. Vandalism? Sure. Criminal? Surely. Suppression or Censorship? Not.
  • Theft of the sign is not the same thing as proof that Christians are/were responsible.
  • There is no freedom of speech on private property.

There is no war on Christmas. There is crass commercialism that has been in place my entire life. There are folks who object to the whole Christmas Season claiming that it overshadows other holidays.

If you like Christmas, celebrate it. IF you don't then don't.

It really is that simple.

I agree but if you allow one you have to allow them all. That is the price we pay for the freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech is fine, but there's also something to be said for being respectful of others traditions. I don't think it's right to have a nativity scene and let atheists set up a sign next to it with an arrow that say's "That's BS" anymore than I think this loopy church in Kansas should be allowed to put up a sign that puts down others beliefs.

I don't care if atheists don't believe (well, I do care but that's something for another post...) but they don't need to rain on anyone else's parade. They can have their sign somewhere else. or like they did in the UK (I think) where they put signs on buses, that's fine. But to set up a disrespectful or hateful message in proximity to others displays isn't right, IMO.

Christmas is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that marks and honors the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. It's a Christian holiday.

Freedom of speech means you get to offend mock and belittle someone else's ideas.

Although I don't think the WBC sign should go up because it sounds like a threat 'santa will rape you, you'll be sent to hell, etc.' If you want to put up a second sign mocking atheism go for it.

Although really a nativity scene isn't disrespectful to anyone really so to put up a sign bashing their beliefs unprovoked, yeah that's kind of uncalled for.

I wish they'd put up a flying spaghetti monster instead that would seem more appropriate than 'religion warps minds'.

I can walk up to you on the street and flip you the bird and there's nothing you can legally do about it.

It doesn't mean I should do this just because I can or because it's a protected action.

If you flip me off in a company car, there will be consequences.

We already knew that.
