Gov. Chris Christie: War on drugs is 'a failure' | NJ.com

"If you're pro-life, as I am, you can't be pro-life just in the womb," Christie said, according to the report. "Every life is precious and every one of God's creatures can be redeemed, but they won't if we ignore them."
He also argued that it makes economic sense.
"It costs us $49,000 a year to warehouse a prisoner in New Jersey state prisons last year," Christie said, according to the report. "A full year of inpatient drug treatment costs $24,000 a year."

He sounds like a (gasp) "liberal".

Clearly, this is a man who understands "addiction".

I just saw that..it was pretty amazing. But Christie is pretty surprising. He also back handed Romney by telling him not to be so "programmed" and to be himself.

Guess he's out of the running for VP.

War on Drugs is a failure.
Treatment costs less than Prison.

Correct on both counts and very Libertarian!

Ron Paul would pardon all non violent drug offenders by the way. Now if we could just get Obama to stop using the Military to guard poppy fields in Afghanistan.

Another cherry picked freaking tax exempt Media Matters scoop that the left is trying to turn into a conspiracy. Get used to it folks, the left wing ain't even started their dirty tricks scorched earth policies yet.

The guy who cut my hair today has a kid in Afghanistan. Yesterday they blew up a truck containing some 25 million dollars of grade A taliban heroin.

With guarding like that...

What is your point? He is spot on, 100 percent correct in this. The war on drugs IS a colossal failure. Everyone knows this. We should end it as soon as possible.

Marines are guarding the poppy fields, it's the CIA that ships it in to the US.

What? Then how is the CIA supposed to get it's slush-fund money?

How fiscally conservative of him.

Wonder if he plans on having addicts sentenced to a year of rehab or just dropping the state laws against drugs.

Christie is correct, but Florida is pushing private prisons and the CPC; I doubt little Ricky Scott will join in this chorus. Like Jeb! before him, the bald sparrow wants as many in the corrections system as possible. Jeb!'s wife made a bundle in the concessions in Florida prisons.* Some of Ricky's financiers are raking in big money off of the new, low wage, barely skilled, "security" in the new private prisons too.

*$1.99 for a six ounce cup of soda turns a good profit. The concessions are for visitors of course.

The US imprisons a larger percent of it's population than any other nation. Our war on drugs is obviously not working
