China starts with a blue water navy

It looks like we need to build up China as a threat to replace the Soviets and a declining terrorist threat since Bin Laden was killed

More reasons to keep our military at Cold War levels

Or maybe we need to be aware of the reality of a changing world.

A world where we are ten times as strong as the next largest military force?

What does it mean if you don't have the means to keep it that way? Let s say I have the most expensive house in the street today, if I have a debt that is bigger than that house then that does put things in a different perspective

Problem with the short term view is that it doesn't work on the long term, if the US economy can not afford a military that is ten times as strong as the next largest military force then you have a problem on the long term. You shouldn't have things you can't afford, isn't that the biggest lesson we should ve learned from the economic crisis?

Let s not forget that experience is not everything, WWII was not won by experience but by bigger war production and higher numbers. The US and the USSR outproduced Germany (tanks) and Japan (fleet & planes) and thats why they won. Do any of you know how little time it took for the US to build up a military from scratch that could outmatch the known military superpowers of that time? (France & colonies and the United Kingdom & colonies)

I agree with you in that the economy is the bigger problem right now. We need to reevaluate the mission of our current military and decide whether we need to cut services to Americans so that we can protect people in other countries
Fact is that the majority of our military expenditures are not to protect Americans at home, but to project our power abroad

It is amazing how bluntly short-sighted some people are, and how limited their concept of our 'interests' is.

China is not even capable of invading Taiwan and that is only 90 miles away

China has a massive military. But, unlike the US, the primary focus of their military is to keep 1.5 billion people under control

And Hitler was not even capable of crossing a little stretch of water to invade England! They have just built new amphibious assault ships and are expanding at an alarming rate. You must remember, the Chinese think long term. In 10 years our military may be a lot smaller because of our inept Congress but the Chinese will have a fully capable amphibious force built by then.

How did Hitler do in invading England? He had a Navy the equivalent of China

Look at the thousands of ships needed to invade Normandy. By controling the air space over England, the allies were able to conceal the buildup for the invasion and the actual invasion itself. With satellites, we know any time China deploys more than two ships at a time

With anti-ship cruise missiles and submarines,a chinese invasion would be wiped out before it left port
