As his Copenhagen speech fell on its face, so too did Obama face equal indifference from China, who made it clear the US President's opinions regarding China's CO2 policy meant little to them...
___

...At an emergency meeting convened at the Bella Center this morning, Barack Obama and Gordon Brown assembled 26 heads of state in an attempt to revive a deal. But China's Premier Wen Jiabao did not attend and was replaced by vice foreign minister He Yafei.

This afternoon, the US president and his secretary of state Hillary Clinton called another meeting with China, but were snubbed again when only three low-level Chinese delegates arrived.

According to a high level source, the US president clearly regarded Premier Wen’s absence as a major diplomatic insult, and snapped: “It would be nice to negotiate with somebody who can make political decisions.”

...UK diplomatic sources later confirmed that China had taken huge offence at remarks by President Obama over the need to independently monitor every country carbon emissions. In his speech President Obama said: "Without any accountability, any agreement would be empty words on a page". The Chinese delegation interpreted these comments as an attempt to humiliate them. It prompted Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to return to his hotel and send low level delegates to take his place in the talks.

I could have warned Obama about this, the Chinese are very prickly, seriously into saving face.

When ever we have to go to my wife's grandfathers favorate Chinese resturant we always get the crappy table by the rest rooms, the shitty 101 year old waiter who brings out one plate every hour and I am sure they spit in our food.

All because her grandfather makes racist comments througout the meal.

I just get drunk and pretend it is a UN Secuirty Council meeting.

Obama to do list 12/18/09:

1. Recycle old hope for change speech for conference. Add verification sentence.
2. Take a shit on Air Force One before attending conference. The toilet paper is much better.
3. Insult 25% of the world's population in one sentence.
4. Save face by claiming a breakthrough in negoiations.
5. Skip group photo op. Nobody will stand next to me.
6. Leave early citing extremely cold weather back in DC and biggest snowfall in years.
7. Make sure to say thanks for nothing to Al Gore.
8. Make Pelosi land first to check the runway.

China has always been difficult to negotiate with. Up until 30 years ago, they would not even talk to the west.
Do you think we should have a treaty with no accountability?
Look at how difficult it is to get an agreement on something like healthcare between Democrats and Republicans. Now look at what it takes to get an agreement on the environment with all the countries on earth.
Any small step we can take is an improvement

Good point, and Obama is actually right to say let's have something real (if one thinks cap and trade is the solution) but the fact is China knows they really do not have to give him anything, indeed Kyoto should have told us the Chinese postion is that they will sign anything that does not require anything serious of them.

I think a much better track here would be for a unilateral agreement between the US and China to work on non-carbon intensive energy production. Neither country benifits from carbon intensive energy dependence in the long term (even if global warming did not exist).

Hell, in Australia we will do our part, we are sitting on a sea of uranium.

Obama has globe trotted endlessly and always comes up empty, but in the tangible and in the respect department.

How can other world leaders respect a leader who does not respect his own nation and it's people?

We're going for the 'loved, laughed at and ignored' strategy, instead of the old 'holy shit, it's the big scary Yanks' approach of old. Neither are particularly successful.

Think about this a moment at how much nonsense this actually was. China wanted the US to borrow money from them to use to build their infrastructure so the US taxpayers would have to pay it back and the Chinese would get the benefits from both ends in order to meet some set standards arrived from the the narrow conclusions for the MMGW community. The bad part about this is , that we were actually willing to do it. not that China wassmart enough to see that these standards would wreck their economy regardless of how much we borrowed to build THIER infrastructure.

I'd rather be looked at like I'm crazy and called a bully than be sneared at and called a pussy.

Actually, until 30 years ago we would not talk to them. I dont think we should have any treaty at all, because a treaty will do absolutely nothing.

How is insulting other nations a small improvement????
