GovTrack: House Vote On Passage: H.R. 2378 [111th]: Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act

The final step was last month when Congress passed H.R. 2378: Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act that outlines specific penalties for countries who manipulate their currency.

The Chinese poured a lot of money into lobbyists to try and stop this from happening. In fact, nearly half of all republicans in the House voted against this bill.

One of the biggest lobbyist groups who took Chinese and India money to try and defeat this bill is the United States Chamber of Commerce.

The largest attack campaign against Democrats this fall is being waged by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a trade association organized as a 501(c)(6) that can raise and spend unlimited funds without ever disclosing any of its donors... The Chamber’s spending has dwarfed every other issue group and most political party candidate committee spending.

U.S. Chamber’s outsourcing partnership – Trade Reform

To be fair, the Chamber has supported some Democrats, as long as they vote Republican:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has been a powerful ally for Republican candidates in this year's midterm campaigns, quietly moved across the aisle this week and bought ads touting nearly a dozen Democratic House members.

The "voter education" spots are running on behalf of 10 members of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition, many of them in the South, including Georgia's Jim Marshall, Virginia's Glenn Nye, Maryland's Frank Kratovil, Mississippi's Travis W. Childers and Alabama's Bobby Bright.

Though the Chamber is officially bipartisan, it has had a strong pro-Republican bent in the last decade under the leadership of President Tom Donohue. In 2008, the organization's political action committee directed at least three-quarters of its spending to help the GOP.

WASHINGTON -- The nation's largest business lobby, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has raised ire among Democratic leaders for pouring millions of dollars into an advertising push to prevent the party from winning dominance in the Senate next year.

The Chamber says it has raised enough money this year from corporations to spend about $35 million on the election, double its budget for House and Senate races in the 2006 election. The group is supporting pro-business candidates, almost exclusively Republicans in contested Senate races.

It's Easter, everyone is with their families. Don't be a phaggot.

This bill is from Sept 2010, BEFORE the Midterms when the Dems were in charge of the House. Additionally, this Bill died in the Senate so thank "Dingy" Harry Reid for not scheduling it for a vote moron. You're such a predictable partisan hack rdean.

Here's a similar House Resolution that was introduced January 20th (That would be the current Congress):
Bill Summary & Status - 112th Congress (2011 - 2012) - H.R.375 - All Information - THOMAS (Library of Congress)
Fix United States Government Contracting Deficit with China Act - Directs the Secretary of Commerce to certify annually to Congress: (1) a determination of whether the Chinese government has prohibited its procurement of U.S. goods during the preceding calendar year; and (2) the total value of U.S. goods procured by the Chinesse government during that year, if the Chinese government has not prohibited such procurement.
Prohibits the head of each executive agency from awarding a contract for the procurement of Chinese goods during the succeeding calendar year if the Chinese government has prohibited procurement of U.S. goods during the preceding calendar year.
Directs the Secretary of Transportation (DOT), in such an instance, to prohibit a state or other entity from using funds made available to it from the Highway Trust Fund or the Airport and Airway Trust Fund for the award of a contract for the procurement of Chinese goods during the succeeding calendar year.
Limits the total value of Chinese goods that may be procured by the U.S. government during the succeeding calendar year to the total value of U.S. goods procured by the Chinese Government during the preceding calendar year, if in fact the Chinese government has not prohibited its procurement of U.S. goods during that preceding calendar year.
Directs the International Trade Administration to establish a program to: (1) identify annually the total value of U.S. goods procured by the Chinese government; and (2) provide notice in the Federal Register on or as soon as practicable after the date on which the total value of Chinese goods procured by the U.S. government equals 50%, 75%, and 100% of the total value of U.S. goods procured by the Chinese government during the preceding calendar year, for purposes of compliance with the limitation required by this Act.
It still needs to get through two committees before it gets schedules for a vote so we'll see.

By the way it took me like, 10 minutes to find this info.

Too bad you didn't read who sponsored it. One fucking Republican was a "co-sponsor". Now this is hilarious. Walter Jones has a rating from Conservatives of 41 out of 100.

Do you think this bill will pass? Republicans aren't going to stand for anything that helps this country. Seems you should have spent MORE than 10 measly minutes. Maybe that's the length of your limited attention span? I dunno?

All these conspiracies and unrelated facts? The entire thing is about the US Chamber of Commerce working with China and the Republicans teaching American business how to outsource. It's all one subject. The evidence is "detailed". Who knows what current delusion has taken over your tiny mind? It twitters and fritters about so.

So, China was responsible for the gop landslide last year?

I suspect their money was partly responsible. The money they gave to the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce gave tens of millions to Republicans, but thanks to the Republican Supreme Court, they don't have to say were it came from. As if tens of millions fall into the Chambers lap every day. But of course, there is no connection. But, like Bush, Republicans never lie.

So Chinese money was given to the COC Deany? Is that why November happened? Is that WHY Obama praised China in the SOTU 2011 speech?

Hmm.

Did you look at this bill at all before you decided it was proof that the Republicans wanted to destroy the middle class, old people, minorities, and babies?

Yesterday business groups, including the American Chamber of Commerce in China, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the US-China Business Council, farmers groups, and trade associations sent a letter to the House of Representatives urging the representatives to not pass H.R. 2378. They wrote, “We believe that passage of this legislation is counterproductive not only to the goals related to China’s exchange rate that we all share, but also to our nation’s broader goals of addressing the many and growing challenges in the U.S.-China economic relationship . . . Above all this legislation will do more harm than good to job creation and economic growth at a time when we need both dearly.” In a speech in New York last week Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said there “was no basis for the drastic appreciation of the yuan, the Chinese currency.” That’s a stretch – every economist I’ve spoken to agrees that the yuan is undervalued by 15-40 percent. But it is true that China’s trade surplus is not due solely to its undervalued currency – the fact is that the world wants what China is selling. It’s also true that a revalued yuan won’t be panacea for America’s economic woes.
Call me crazy, but the passage of the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act in the House (even if it doesn’t pass the Senate, or Obama doesn’t sign it) is still a huge gamble at a very fragile time for America’s economy. There is a reason why a wide range of business groups (including, yes, U.S. farmers) urged the House not to pass the bill – because it will do more harm than good.
Again I’ll repeat my call for China and the U.S. to sit down at the table and find a mutually beneficial trade arrangement. It is possible – trade need not be zero sum. But do policymakers have the will?

Yea, let's see if Senate Republicans vote for it.

No one can hide the FACT the chamber of commerce and the GOP and China gave these seminars during the Bush years. They were held in over a dozen major US cities. That's the truth. That's what happened. The right wing can deny it, but then, they also deny evolution, something else that can't be denied by any serious person.

The "The U.S. Chamber of Commerce" is a special interest group working on behalf of the major international corporations.

It is no more interested in supporting America and Americans than the CHINESE GOVERNMENT is.

The only thing you know about this law is some Democrat proposed it, and he said it will be good for the country. Does the fact that business groups, trade groups, and consumers groups have all united in a call to kill it mean nothing to you? Does the fact that it will essentially drive up prices on everything, push us from the recovery Obama is trying to argue we are in into a depression, and possibly tank the world economy matter to you, or does you hatred of all things Chinese force you to support it because you are a bigot?

You mean the Republicans are the communists. I know why they call us communists, because it gets the spotlight on them.

Oh, I get it. Only corporations know what's good for America. Yea, it's clear to me now.

Let me explain something. If you are referring to "supply and demand", then increased demand will drive up prices, if the supply is limited.

If there is no demand, because no one has any money, then prices should drop, but they haven't. Why is that?

Take oil for instance. There is plenty of oil. Oil that's discovered here goes on the world market. But why do the prices keep going up?

That's because of speculation from an unregulated Wall Street. Read about speculation. It's very interesting.

Wall Street buys politicians so they can deregulate. That way, they can make money off "food" or "oil" or "housing". They don't care who gets hurt. It's all about the money. By deregulating, Republicans have opened the floodgates.

Hilarious is the fact that the Republican base still thinks their leaders are doing a "good job".
