There was a time when there was no way to disparage a product as much as saying "Made in Japan"

The Chinese have excellent school systems for their best and brightest. One only has to look at our own engineering and science programs to see how many are Chinese or Chinese descent. Their workers are very dedicated and detail oriented. No reason China cannot put out a quality product

China is just entering the industrialized era. They are still paying for their mistakes. Look at the buildings they created for the 2008 Olympics and you can see they can be cutting edge on architecture and construction.

Their biggest problem right now is the acceleration of their building projects. Cutting corners always comes with risk.

China is graduating an order of magnitude more engineers every year than we are. They are putting out a lot on money on basic research in many fields. And some of their companies are innovative enough that people like Buffet are putting major money into them.

It is very easy to point out the errors and shoddy products in another nation. We did that with Japan, until they ate our lunch in the automotive market.

I would very much like to see an engineering geologist's assessment of that hotel.

We can become very effective allies as China continues to develop and eventually becomes more politically open and democratic. HOWEVER, there is no reason for blind cheerleading and failing to point out the very serious and potentially deadly weaknesses that still exist there - including what is a superficially new and shiny but ultimately inferior infrastructure. Lefties in the US and Europe were beside themselves over China's quickly built and heavily financed high speed rail system until it almost immediately proved to be fatally flawed.

Climate change is real
There will always be uncertainty in understanding a system as complex as the world’s climate. However there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is

Is it being scrapped, or upgraded and fixed?

I have worked on many rebuilding projects where a company chose the low bid, and the machinery reflected that fact, and had to be rebuilt in order to function in a manner that was profitable.

And still the managers of the company brag about the bargain they made on the machinery, rather than looking at the fact that they paid a time and an half what the good machinery would have cost by the time we fixed it so the machinery would do what was needed. Managers of whatever nationality do this.

Which high speed rail system? I rode on the maglev..seemed fine.
