In an effort to promote internationalism, China is learning English.

In the next five years, all state employees younger than 40 will be required to master at least 1,000 English phrases, and all schools will begin teaching English in kindergarten. The government also is funding extensive teacher training programs to find new models for language learning and develop new textbooks.

Parents who can afford to, are sending their children -- some as young as 2 -- to private language schools that are popping up all over the country. By the time they are 10, the children will be fluent.

"China is more open to the world," said one teacher. "We [the older generation] want our kids to open their eyes to get to know the world [and] look at China not only from standing in China but from outside of China as well."

State-run TV launched an "American Idol"-type of reality show where kids have to sell themselves in English to clinch the judges' votes.

Signs in not-quite-right English -- "Car Repairable," "Cosme Toulogy" and "Welcom Go Home" -- can be found across the country.

For the adults, learning the language is more of a struggle but it doesn't deter them from trying. And many Chinese hope that more Americans do the same.

Now why would the United States bank on the loser race of Latino while the Chinese are learning English? Shouldn't the Chinese look to the future and learn SPANISH?

We will never defeat Communist China with our military.....we can defeat them with our culture

It's kind of creepy if you're scared of a one world economy. It's good news if you believe in a Human Race, as opposed to division-by-nation.

English is mandatory in Japan as well but it really hasn't helped.

True. If we export Lady Gaga and Feminism.

English is mandatory in Japan, the Philippines and Korea.

Listening to Japanese and Koreans try to speak English, even after studying it for 6 years in middle school and high school is great comedy.

And They always seem to find the worst way of arranging an english sentence so that the result is a horrible sexual double entendre.

That said, China doesn't do things by halves. Kids are in school 45 weeks a year, and they can do total immersion and nowadays they can bring age appropriate tv in to help with pronunciation.

It will be cool to see what they can do with it.

One of those weird internet stories that floats around is that China already has more people who can get 700 english on a SAT than the US does.

The poor people of Kenya spent years learning English to come to the US to get jobs. Now they switched to learning Chinese because they believe they will have a better chance over there and America sucks.:(

....And, if they slow-down (long-enough), we just might catch-UP to them.....

I've been to Japan. Let's just say that the Japanese you see coming to visit English speaking countries are the crême de la crême of English speakers, and the majority of Japanese people aren't that good at English.

Strange how many that claim to support globalization fear and fight tooth and nail the reality globalization brings about.

Kind of like "racial equality," and the reality that brought about.

Yep, be careful what you ask for you may get it in ways you do not expect.

I think the point here is that people are tongue in cheek. They constantly produce rhetoric implying that they are open and accepting so that they can save face, but when a real life scenario comes to pass where their words are put to the test, it becomes obvious how hollow those words really are. Kind of like the NIMBY syndrome with integration.
