More than 300 injured by strong quake in ChinaThu Jul 9, 5:18 pm ET

BEIJING – A moderate earthquake rocked southwest China Thursday evening, injuring at least 336 people and collapsing 10,000 homes, state media said. The magnitude-6.0 temblor, centered in Yunnan province's Yao'an county, damaged another 30,000 homes, the Xinhua News Agency said.

Thirty people suffered severe injuries, while the other 305 were slightly injured, Xinhua said.

The quake was followed by eight aftershocks and the provincial civil affairs department was sending 4,500 tents, 3,000 quilts and other relief materials to Yao'an, Xinhua said.

On July 28, 1976 hundreds of thousands were killed following an 8.3 magnitude earthquake in China. It was believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll.

WIKI,
Early warnings and predictions

Well water in a village outside of Tangshan reportedly rose and fell three times the day before the earthquake. Gas began to spout out of a well in another village on July 12 and then increased on July 25 and July 26.[5]

More than half a month before the earthquake struck, Wang Chengmin (汪成民) of the State Seismological Bureau (SSB) Analysis and Prediction Department had already concluded that the Tangshan region would be struck by a significant earthquake between July 22, 1976 to August 5, 1976.[1] Abnormal signals were mentioned for Beijing, Tianjin, Tangshan, Bohai and Zhangjiakou regions. Wang made an effort to publicize the information to 60 people. One of the people listening in Qinglong was official Wang Chunqing (王春青).[1]

Last year their big quake was in May.

On a slightly ironic note...MOSS TENT, which has a production facitility in Belfast, Maine, will be closing thus 100 employees will be out of work.

Perhaps it's time for China to stop imposing that VAT tax on our imported goods for the benefit of THEIR consumers.

Thats 4 families to a tent. One never knows. That could be considered spacious living in that part of the world.
