China can but the US can't

I think in a way, the US missed its chance with high-speed rail. Look at the developments in Japan and Europe during the '60s. The US really should have followed suit and built up a network as early as possible. As was said, the Chinese are progressing so swiftly due to the regime in place and the lack of personal car ownership means high speed rail could be really effective.

Its a great way of travelling between the country's largest cities in western china. If you look at statistics about China's GDP, they really have the wealth now and the capacity to build the infrastructure they missed out on due to their own past stupidity. I think the extent and success of the high speed rail project should be admired.
