e. Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.

f. Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

g. Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

h. Eighty-nine percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and more than a third have an automatic dishwasher.

i. As a group, America's poor are far from being chronically undernourished. The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is virtually the same for poor and middle-class children and, in most cases, is well above recommended norms. Poor children actually consume more meat than do higher-income children and have average protein intakes 100 percent above recommended levels. I gotta tell you hon,, these kids look the picture of health, you ever compare them to a hungry kid in Somalia? I know for a fact our society provides for two hot meals per day in school and for food stamps. Now don't you think the parents should so SOMETHING?

by any standards I grew up in poverty too, the deal is you don't know you're poor cause everyone around you is in the same situation. We did have three meals per day, a lot of times it was beans and milk but it was good food. To this day I'll make a good pot of beans and some cornbread. fills the tummy and oh so yummy. EDUCATION is the way out of poverty. EDUCATION.

Myself and my 6 siblings (aged 3-18) were poor children from the mid 60's to the mid 70's. That's 10 years of hard time.


Excuse me if I have no high def color video from that era.

And to this day we blame no one. It's just how it was.

Nowadays, folks spend more time pointing blame than they do just dealing with it. Or taking responsibility for doing something about it.
