Chicago teachers to go on strike after talks with Rahm Emanuel fail

1. Chicago teachers strike with an impasse against Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago.

2. The school district was facing a $700 million deficit.

3. The latest offer has been a 16% raise and an evaluation tied to student standardized test scores, but teachers aren’t having any part of it. They say that would cost 6,000 teacher jobs.

Who these days is seeing a 16% raise? Teachers have to be accountable for their performance, but the devil is in the details. Scores should only count from spring to spring scores, (No pre and post scores) and only students without attendance problems should be included in the evaluation. It should be on growth of performance and not meeting the standards of the grade. (one month growth for each month in school would be considered average)

The two sides were not far apart on compensation, but were on other issues, including health benefits — teachers want to keep what they have now — and a new teacher evaluation system based partly on students' standardized test scores, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said.

So the greedy get more money and don't have to go on obamacare.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel condemned the union's decision, and said the negotiations could be resolved if the two sides kept talking, "given how close we are."

"This is not a strike I wanted," Emanuel said. "It was a strike of choice ... it's unnecessary, it's avoidable and it's wrong. "

yeah, I'm sure he's all about the children. pfft, It's about the election.

400,000 kids are taking it in the ass, grats dems, confuckinggats.

The irony of it all! A leading Democrat having Union problems. In another article, the Union called Emanuel a "bully" and wanted Obama to talk to Rahm. A 16% raise?!!!

"A 16% raise."

When many haven't had a raise it quite some time...if they are lucky enough to even have a job.

Liberals don't care.

They think if a teacher gets a raise, they will magically not suck anymore.

the raise is 9% (3%+2+2+2) spread out over 4 years plus their COLAs = 16%

they say Rahm is angry...he says there was no reason to go on strike.....but he is now busy going to a fund raiser  while the school administrators are setting up "baby-sitting centers"....

evidently the teachers group has no idea why they stopped negotiations before the midnight deadline last night......they thought the agreement was very close to being done....

it appears it was the Union that unilaterally stopped negotiations for some reason....and is now using bullying tactics.....

things are hopping in Chicago today with the strikes ....but it is almost like GroundHog day too.....people are waiting to see if Jesse Jackson Jr. will appear....

but they CARE so much for the childreeeeeeeeeeeeen

and they NEED a RAISE damnit..the hell if your kids are going to school

Many teachers are dupes for the leaders of their unions. How many times have we heard that the Board of Ed in many towns bust the budget. Christie took them on in NJ and won and he's still at it.

It's always for the good of the kids. Yeah right!

Who the hell gets a job guarantee for life.

The fact that he even offered 16% should piss the taxpayers off who aren't completely blinded.

Forget it, it's Chicago. Those people are so brainwashed there's no hope. Why do they keep electing crooks? Illinois is the crookedest state in the Union.

Factbox: Chicago teachers dispute is over school reform, money

1. The state of Illinois and city of Chicago are in dire financial straits, leaving the school district little room to maneuver in the dispute.

2. To close a $665 million deficit for the budget year that began in July, the district drained financial reserves and levied property taxes at the highest level allowed by law.

3. Chicago teachers make a mean of $61,790 annually for a primary school teacher to $69,470 for high school,

4.The union released a study last year saying that average class sizes in Chicago were among the highest in Illinois at 24.2 in kindergarten, 25.2 in third grade and 25.1 in high school.

5. On the most recent federal skills test, Chicago students fared worse than students in many other urban districts, such as Austin, Texas, and New York

brainwashed is right......the union also represents all the people who provide what are called "wraparound" social services......of course they are pushing for adding more of these people.....

There is no way the state can make these pensions!

They always think they can, because they always believe they can just keep raising taxes, be it property, sales or income taxes. And once the more affluent people get sick of it an move, they know they have to tap into federal money to make up the difference.

That is why democratic control of the federal level is so important to them.

fun......who do you think will win.......

pitbull Karen Lewis (Chicago's Teacher Union President)...?

it is funny

The union feeds the dem machine, the machine pretends to draw a line in the sand, then concedes, for the children, the unions feed the dem machine, the state and it's taxpayers take it in the ass.

And they wonder why all the states ringing them are red or going red, and succeeding.
