Why do people cheat on their spouses or mates?

What do you think is the MAIN reason?

If sex, do you think it's the QUANTITY or the QUALITY?
Or do you think it's more due to personality mis-match?

Excitement of something illicit or forbidden.

Before I turned 21 and it was legal for me to do so, I drank and drunk often. Once it was legal, I quit by age 22. :)

Before it was legal and accepted for me to have sex, I had lots of sex. Once it was acceptable it became an 'every few years occurence.'

Once something's allowed, the desire to do it lessens. When you get married especially, there's the whole 'forsake all others' thing which I feel is just a guarantee of cheating. Don't forbid something unless you want people to do it. :)

A guarantee of cheating?? ^ this is why this guy belongs nowhere near these advice threads.

Not within 1, 000 lightyears of them.

The pursuit of pussy is not rational. It is driven by emotion and biology.

But the MAIN reason is that many people (mainly men) simply lack character. Their wedding vows mean next-to-nothing to them, and if it is convenient to break them they do it - often with enthusiasm.

Also, our culture promotes the fiction that one's Spouse should be eternally sexy and always attractive, and if you find after marriage that you no longer find that person the sexiest person in the world, then the marriage was a mistake because s/he was not your true "soul mate."

There is nothing more important than personal gratification. It explains a lot, including "gay marriage," abortion, the spread of AIDS and other STD's, and other societal ills.

.. question ... WHY DO THEY GET MARRIED???

I admire Derek Jeter. Do you know why? He's not married. Do you know why he's not married? Because he's a GUY!

Variety is the main reason some men and women are attracted to others sexually, and act upon it because it enhances THEIR ego. I don't think men are by nature, monogamous, and the ones who do stay true to their wives do so because of the marital vows they committed to, if they are Christians. I also think men can have extramarital affairs while still loving their wives but not enough to take a chance on betraying them and getting caught. These are very selfish individuals.

I don't believe in marital infidelity for any reason and have never compromised my values which are based upon moral self-expectations rather than religion. I don't like to chip away at my integrity. I won't do it.

Another main reason is monogamy isn't natural. Thus people often cheat. Whether physically havig sex with another, looking at images of people they desire but don't admit, masturbating to porn, etc.

We're animals. Sooner people accept that the sooner many of the things they do will begin making sense.

We are SENTIENT animals that understand cause and effect and develop a relevant moral framework as to not harm others as much as possible, while at the same time benefitting ourselves.

Monogamy being an example - many of us desire a life partner for sex, raising children, shared life maintenance duties and sharing experiences with. Its mutually beneficial and the fact that it would emotionally damage the other if you were to cheat is why we avoid doing so, the good and moral among us.

Humans are very able to create their own "nature," because we THINK. people who cannot overcome their desires and give in to those desires which hurt others are the less moral among us. In many ways.

I see no excuse for cheating. Either enter into an "open marriage" with someone who feel as you do...or don't get married.

Since men are not monogamous by nature, I still don't understand why they would ever get married......?

Men? Explain???

The thrill of the kill, for a man, or another notch on his bedpost.
For a woman it's from a lack of attention at home...

So,,you into swinging??

I am not but I know some couples that are. And that lifestyle works for them. Its all about communication and honesty.

And I don't buy this "its not natural for men to be monogamous" stuff....that's just an excuse...

It's risky though.... people can fall for other people... not sure I would want to "go there""....

men do realize you don't have to be married to have babies, right?

but I think I get what you are saying, they want a family but still get strange on the side... cake & eat.... admirable (not) and then men wonder why women call them pigs...
