. . . the goal, now that Trump has comfortably settled in as president, is to pull the administration away from the hard right to the left, settling on some sort of centrist platform.

Trump Policy To Move To The Center, Possibly Squeezing Out This Key Team Member

Let me dispel that myth right off the bat. Trump talks hard right, but he has not done a damn thing that can be called governing from the center.

Trump nominated Gorsuch, but Mitch McConnell got him confirmed. I will reserve judgement on Gorsuch until he votes on a few cases.

Trump may get to nominate two or more justices in addition to the lower courts. They better be strict constitutionalists from top to bottom if he hopes to be reelected in 2020. If Trump does not fix it for conservatives to control the federal bench for decades to come Democrats certainly will do it for their agenda:

How will Gorsuch shape future Supreme Court rulings?

Paul Ryan will not allow Trump to repeal Obamacare. They already blew it big time. Now they are talking about trying again with the same crap. I call that governing from the left.

Nobody doubts Trump’s compassion, but there is a lot of doubt surrounding his political motive for bombing. Syria. The UN’s dirty hands have been all over our foreign policy since 1945; so I doubt very much if he bombed an air field unilaterally. North Korea is another matter:

Even if President Trumps does move to a gossamer center from this point forward it will be a center he inherited from Obama. Trump will make a lot of noise about moving BACK to the center, but he ain’t going anywhere with establishment Republicans controlling both Houses of Congress. Those same Republicans never stood up to Obama. Hell, they even refused to repeal Obamacare when they had the Congress and the White House.

Watch tax reform “from the center” and you will see Republicans and Democrats conducting business as usual.

Basically, LBJ began moving the definition of center to encompass his welfare state. Jimmy Carter moved the center further left. Ronald Reagan inherited the media’s definition of governing from the center.

To this day Bill Clinton is said to be brilliant because he moved to the center. That nonsense is another Clinton lie. He not only governed from the left from the day he was sworn in he created a center that was further left than the one he inherited.

The fact is that every Democrat administration redefines the center. Every piece of welfare state legislation that becomes law immediately moves into the center (settled law). Nothing is ever repealed. That is why no Republican administration can get back to what the center was 20 years before they took over let alone move the center back to the pre-LBJ center. Sad to say, I do not see Trump taking us there.

Short of violent revolution, there is little hope conservative Americans will get back to the permanent center America’s Founders set in stone:

Totalitarian government is one extreme. Anarchy is the other extreme. Limited government is the permanent center; it never moves.

I agree with you, but the tug of war has just gotten written in stone by the nuclear option taken by the senate. You will have some of your way until the people get sick of you, and then it will be undone by the left. The center is no more because the politicians no longer want compromise. I don't really think you do, either. You put up two extremes of government and posit that "Limited government" is the middle. Actually, democracy is the permanent center and what the people want can go in either direction.
I don't know why you put this in the Garage, but it was nice having a smoke with you.

The folks in the center need to have the confidence to form an independent party and vote their people into office. Expecting centerists from the Democrats or Republicans is a false hope.

To OldLady: That beats the hell out of Democrats always getting their activist judges. At least now there is a level playing field.
You will have some of your way until the people get sick of you, and then it will be undone by the left.
To OldLady: I once suggested that Republicans change the rules —— then change the rules back in their final days after they lose the majority in an election. Of course, Democrats can do the same thing.
The center is no more because the politicians no longer want compromise.
To OldLady: Nor should they. Compromise is another way of saying bipartisanship —— the curse of individual liberties.
I don't really think you do, either.
To OldLady: You think wrong.
You put up two extremes of government and posit that "Limited government" is the middle.
To OldLady: The Constitution did it for me.
Actually, democracy is the permanent center and what the people want can go in either direction.
To OldLady: Thank this country’s Founders that America is not a democracy.

Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance. H. L. Mencken

For one thing parasites always preferred democracy, yet after thousands of years democracy is rejected by everybody except parasites and totalitarians.

Democracy is always going towards something worse; never towards liberty. Flanders

Finally, whenever Democrats engage in nation-building the rhetoric always begins with a promise of democracy. If you take a close look at their efforts you will see that they actually began nation-building (democracy) in this country in the early 20th century. Early Socialist might have had a case if they were talking about replacing a totalitarian government with democracy. America’s Founders knew better. They replaced a monarchy with a clearly enumerated limited government.

Admittedly, democracy looks good to everybody living in a totalitarian dictatorship —— not so good to people who enjoy individual liberties. That political reality is a major stumbling block for our own dirty little Communists like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. They have to complete the task of overthrowing freedom in their own country, while Communists elsewhere take all the best of it when they promise freedom after democracy replaces whatever form of foreign government enslaves them.

p.s. Communist regimes are not burdened with promises of democracy after they give their people a taste of it.

To OldLady: It fits here because CENTER is the premise fortified by several topics of equal significance. Had I put it in another forum a liberal would have complained.
Expecting centerists from the Democrats or Republicans is a false hope.
To saveliberty: Exactly so. Limited government suffers equally under Democrats and Republicans.

I am not sure which center the Chi Sun means:

A call to revive America's political center

Give the boy sailor a break. Many of the people named in the article contributed to the mess this country is in. The Sun seems to think an old Commie sympathizer like Leon Panetta, and New World Order moralists, represent the center Americans are yearning for. In short: Everybody the Sun lists favor bigger government one way or another —— including another layer of government administered by the United Nations. I never heard these two:
