The national wildfire known as "Caylee's Law" has come to Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Legislators in both states are drafting proposed laws - in response to public uproar over the verdict in the Casey Anthony trial - that would oblige parents and guardians to promptly report the death or disappearance of a child.

The overnight push for new laws has some lawmakers and legal experts cautioning against "knee-jerk" legislation.

Michelle Crowder of Oklahoma, inspired by a "Caylee's Law" proposal on Facebook, created a petition for a federal version of such a law on the website Change.org. Crowder wants to make it a felony for parents or caretakers not to report a child's death within one hour or a child's disappearance within 24 hours. The petition had attracted 443,707 supporting votes as of late Thursday afternoon.

By then, versions of "Caylee's Law" were afoot in Congress and seven state capitals, including Trenton and Harrisburg.

Fueled by verdict anger, push for 'Caylee's Law' starts in Pa., N.J. | Philadelphia Inquirer | 07/08/2011

Knee jerk reaction or common sense law?

Strange that "parents" need to have a law about that. It should be named Parents Who Are Murdering Pigs Law.. PWAMPL

That's what Greta Van Sustern said. Since 99.9% of parents would do this already, do we need a law for the .01%, who as Willow noted, may be the criminal?

I would imagine a parent could be charged with neglect if a missing child isn't reported. In that case, the family has much bigger problems.

These are the type of things that show how far our society has fallen. The fact that we would even consider the necessity for a parent to report that their child is missing should be disgusting to most people. Common sense tells you that. However, with our current society, it doesn't surprise me that we might see a need for something like this. Very, very, very sad.

Its closing the barn door after the cows have already left. In the mind of the supporters, they could have at least gotten casey a few years in jail if this law had been on the books.

Such a law could be responsible for many innocents sent to jail.

Say your child dies of natural causes in their sleep and you discover it the next morning. An unscrupulous DA could charge the parents with failure to report the death with in one hour of the death occurring

And what exactly is the age requirements on said law? If you have a child that is a teen and routinely runs away, this could become onerous.

As was noted criminals are not going to follow the law anyway. We don't need laws that are pointless.

She was found not guilty live with it.

I thought about that but one of the charges was child endangerment and she was found not guilty of even that. That was one of the DP charges.

If this new law doesn't have any teeth, which I feel it wouldn't, like years in prison, it would be ineffective anyway. I guess I'd say yes to a law like that only if the punishment was harsh.

Who allows their child to be missing for a month? I will never get over this..

why do people always feel the need for a new law? normally when one wants to report a missing person...the police always want to wait.....not with real young kids but with 10 ish and over.....so now if i got a 10 yr old who takes flight and i know the little bastard is just fucking off at billie bob's cause the is his best friend.....am i to call the police?

How about going one step farther? A law that requires parents to report a missing child and, if they violate the law, their name goes up on a Web site with their home address listed so everyone can know what kind of parents are living on their block.

What do you say? :bsflag:

"Caylee's Law" aka, you child is the property of the state law .

Where were those scumbages when the Delta Force was incinerating ALIVE 20 children in Waco, TX, circa 1993?

Where were those scumbags when slick willy was sending Elian Gonzalez to a slave state?

Where were those scumbags while criminal George Bush was murdering children in Iraq?

In all honesty we need the law, but not for the failed parent...for idiotic jurors who are confused between doubt and confusion.
At least then someone will still go to jail.

Its a stupid law and chasing it down is a waste of tax payers money.

This law has some potential flaws that have already been noted in this thread. The vast majority of parents already report their kids missing when they disappear anyway.

Jon Stossel said "Dead Children Make Bad Laws" With the exception of Megan's Law, I agree.

Megan's Law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A December 2008 study of the law in New Jersey concluded that it had no effect on community tenure (i.e., time to first re-arrest), showed no demonstrable effect in reducing sexual re-offenses, had no effect on the type of sexual re-offense or first time sexual offense (still largely child molestation/incest), and had no effect on reducing the number of victims of sexual offenses. The authors felt that given the lack of demonstrated effect of the law on sexual offenses, its growing costs may not be justifiable.[2]
