A film shown to an honors class at Ridge High School last month has created a firestorm of controversy among parents, prompting swift policy changes in the school district.

Last week, dozens of parents railed against a Spanish teacher’s decision to show a nearly 30-minute segment of El Crimen del Padre Amaro (The Crimes of Father Amaro) to her class at a Bernards Township School Board meeting. The Academy Award-nominated film takes a highly critical view of the Catholic church, and the segment shown to students depicts a woman feeding the Eucharist to her cat and a young girl confessing to a priest that she masturbates to thoughts of Jesus.

“We are instituting new procedures for teachers when considering the use of a clip from an R-rated video,” Goger said. “It includes obtaining approval from their supervisor, and providing sufficient notice to parents so that they have plenty of time to review the video themselves before deciding if they want to permit their student to view it.”

Kim Lopez, whose daughter was in the class and was offended by the film, said she appreciates the swift response by the board but is disappointed that neither the teacher, who was not named, nor Ridge High School Principal Frank Howlett has apologized in the wake of the incident.

Now substitute the word Catholic....

I was thinking ""global warmer" but certainly Muslims might cause a stink too.

It sounds to me like this principal would approve such a film in the future as long as the parents give permission for the R rating. The teacher should be reprimanded.
