Job creation slows again in April; jobless rate dips

The U.S. economy generated fewer jobs than expected in April, but the unemployment rate dipped slightly and data from prior months was revised upward, painting a murky picture of labor market conditions.

It was the second straight month that hiring slowed in the U.S. and it raises concerns, six months before Americans go to the polls to choose either President Barack Obama or his Republican challenger Mitt Romney as president, that the nation's job-creating machine is sputtering.

The Labor Department said Friday that non-farm payrolls rose by 115,000 last month, much lower than the consensus estimate of about 165,000. The jobless rate slid a notch to 8.1 percent from 8.2 percent, as more people left the work force.

Yes, indeedy!

FORWARD!!

Right off the cliff..................

Unemployment down. Got it.

Wrong.

Employment is down.

We dont know, nor do we have a way to find out what the unemployment numbers are.

But, when we see that employment is down? It does not require a rocket scientist to knoiw that unemployment is up.

as more people left the work force.

as more people left the work force.

as more people left the work force.

Those "more people" vote, too.

And yet....companies are, instead of hiring, still laying off employees. And we are expected to believe the economy is improving and that unemployment is going down? Not sorry to say....most Americans aren't that stupid....to believe the PR and propaganda coming from the WH and their water carriers, the mainstream media.

I am one of millions of folks that just gave up after looking for two years for another job. It's just not out there. And again, I keep hearing reports of other companies laying off hundreds of employees. And Obama is gutting the military and bringing troops home. Does anyone really think those military employees will be able to find a job now? Hell no. They will join the ranks of the permanently unemployed and of those without hope of finding a job as long as Obama and the Socialcrats are in power.

ABO in November!!!

Why is it that every damn month we must explain to liberals yet again how those numbers are calculated? Do we really have to spell it out again in detail or is saying "discouraged workers" enough?

People don't really matter.

How the left feels about unemployment is really what matters.

So what if less people are working. So what if a million less people are paying federal income-taxes. Obama is set on raising taxes on those of us that are still working Jan 1st to the tune of $500 billion come hell or high water. It's done.

Less people are working and less people are paying state and federal income-taxes, so taxes are going up elsewhere. On property, on food, on everything.

So what. Those "rich" 1%ers need to get shafted. Problem isn for those who aren't aware.....it's costing all of us big time now.

They ALWAYS lay off people DUH. But thanks for the depression, moron dupes. The sky is NOT falling, as opposed to Pubs' contribution. Try to remain calm, Fox/Rushbots...

That's been said forever. The point is to stick with a given rate so you can compare over time or you have a situation where rates are cherry-picked to suit an agenda. NO THANKS.

you ignored this...

Yes, you wish to cherry-pick your favorite rate, despite the fact that this is the rate that's been used forever.

The civilian labor force shrank in April by 342,000 workers, and remains below where it stood when the economic recovery started 34 months ago, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Had the labor force not declined, unemployment would have been 8.3% in April, instead of the 8.1% reported.

where did I cherry pick something?

I simply stated that you ignored the fact that the reason there was a drop in the UE rate was that more people left the workforce.

Yeah and the argument has been valid just as long. It's not "cherry picking" to look at a single government statistic and say "hmmmmm....that doesn't quite add up now does it?" Quite the contrary, you are the one cherry picking since you are only looking at the U3 rate and not the U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, and U6 rates as a group.

Adding 115,000 jobs nationally is so small that it can't really have an effect. More people are hired over Christmas sales every year. It certainly can't account for an entire 1% drop. 115,000 is a fraction of a fraction.

More people that were looking for work are no longer looking for work. Some of these people likely have completed a transition into government support.
