The St. Louis Cardinals fired manager Mike Matheny late Saturday - as well as hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller - after the team squandered the 2-0 lead it had against the Cincinnati Reds before a rain delay in St. Louis' 8-2 loss at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals fell to 47-46 this season with their third consecutive loss and second to the Reds in the first two games of a three-game series. The Reds have outscored the Cardinals 17-3 in the first two games of the series.

Bench coach Mike Shildt is taking over as the Cardinals' interim manager.
