New car sales in 2012:

United States (population: 310 million): 14.4 million cars
Germany (population: 80 million): 3.1 million cars
United Kingdom (population: 65 million): 2 million cars
France (population: 65 million): 1.8 million cars (worst since the 1990s)
Italy (population: 60 million): 1.3 million cars (worst since the 1970s)
Spain (population: 47 million): 700,000 cars (worst since the 1970s)
Netherlands (population: 17 million): 400,000 cars

Over 1 million japanese and german premium cars were sold in USA in 2012.

Not only less cars. Europeans (southern europeans in particular) tend to prefer small and efficient cars, because of the VAT and other indirect taxes and high gas prices.
