I'm a rather avid fan of this man's work (read several books about him and seen quite a few documentaries about his life and work). What he lacked in eclecticism (on a superficial level, that is), he made up with brilliance and uniqueness. His magnum opus, Trout Mask Replica (1969), is a work of art and exhibits a type of music normally found in free improvisation and free jazz... even though the entirety of it is composed. It's dada, it's blues, it's fucking Captain Beefheart.

Anyways, here are a few videos:

Anyone else a fan?

According to this dude, Trout Mask Replica is the best rock album ever!

Never been a fan of Scaruffi's ratings on albums. However, he's a great musical historian, and he occasionally gives interesting insight into the music every now and then.

Better than Sgt Peppers??

What a clown.

Beatles don't even make his top 29 groups of the 1960s.

Spare "alternative" viewpoints...............

Eh, it's just his opinion. Music is a very personal construct you know...

I never heard of Trout Mask Replica
It really is a wonderful, timeless album. I highly recommend you give it a listen whenever you get the chance.

I played a few of Captain Beefheart tunes on your link. And read some of the rave reviews. And the bio of the guy - partner of Frank Zappa.

Guess I am missing something.

Need to be on drugs to decihper that incoherant NOISE.

I'm into folk rock stuff from the 60s like Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds.

Really mellows you out.

I don't do drugs, and I love the album. It's not for everyone, though, I guess.

(I enjoy contemporary folk and folk rock also, by the way).

Just a bunch of noise to me.

My parents said the same thing about the Beatles.

I had heard of Zappa vaguely - but not this guy.

Beefheart's music isn't textural or abrasive enough to be noise. He's more like a weird combination of blues, Bach, dadaist poetry, and avant-garde jazz. This is noise (from the man who invented noise music):
