Canada’s hydropower industry has plans to invest up to $70 billion on hydro-electric projects across the country in the next 10 to 15 years, increasing its hydro-electric resources – to a truly staggering 88,500 MW.

Much of the new clean power is for exporting to the US – at least initially. “Each terawatt hour of hydro exported to the United States largely replaces fossil fuel generation,” says Irving. In Canada, only 19% of power comes from coal, so exporting it to the dirtier US grid will have more effect on global greenhouse gas emissions. Current hydropower exports to the US already reduce continental greenhouse gas emissions by at least half a million tons annually, he says.

Natural gas with a 2-handle probably does more to reduce coal usage.

gas is expensive for the consumers, hydro is the cheapest you can get. and it is also renewable. it is also expensive to run and maintain a gaspower plant. +co2 emissions.

gas is also a less flexible source than hydro. but gas can be a good supplement, but hydro is by far the best and cheapest source of power you can get.

Many plants are cogeneration, which allows them to switch from coal to gas pretty easily. The cost is already sunk so the cost of switching is minimal.

Yes it can, but it is still more expensive to buy gas than hydro.

My number 1 source would be to get as much hydro into the rid as possible, wind and gas are not that diffrent in price. natural gas prices in the future will also be more expensive, so it is a short term solution and can work well as a supplement.
