Controlling segments of the trade and supplying the demand are two different things. Europeans controlled and increased the demand for slaves for financial gain. Therefore American slavery was for financial gain not due to a military threat.

Israel gets $2.4 billion in aid from the US (similar to what Pakistan and Egypt get I mght add), but their GDP is $205 Billion! The US aid primarily goes to military capabilities (which make up 25% of Israel's military spend - Israel covers the other 75%), so in order for Israel to keep up it's military edge it would have to spend the money, which I highly doubt they would be capable of! However, their economy is pretty much self-sufficient and they are a highly industrialized country. The US aid doesn't help with their economy. They build a strong economy, see my cites below. Would they survive? Yes! Would the be the military powerhouse they are today? Probably not!
