Cameron Kasky asked Rubio to abjure NRA money; Rubio dodged the question

Do you think Sen. Rubio should have directly -- with "yes" or "no" -- answered Kasky's question?

  • No, Rubio should not have answered "yes" or "no" to Kasky's question.

In last night's town hall meeting among MSD students and several FL elected officials, Cameron Kasky posed a question to Marco Rubio that goes directly to the heart of what keeps elected officials aligned with the gun lobby:
Simple "yes/no" answerable question.

Do you think Rubio answered directly and honestly with "yes" or "no?" He did not; he didn't even come close to doing so. Squirming like a worm in hot ashes, Rubio uttered one squirrelly remark after another.

Why was Rubio so squirrelly? There are at least 3.2 million reasons.

To put that $3.2M in perspective with regard to Sen. Rubio:
  • From 2013 to 2018, his campaign spent ~$19M, yet in 2016 alone he benefited from $3.2M of the NRA's "largesse."
  • In 2014, Sen. Rubio raised (i.e., contributions directly to his campaign) ~$3.2M. Then in 2016, the NRA spent on Rubio's behalf, as much as he'd raised from individuals and groups who actually supported him and could donate directly to him.
  • The NRA's direct cash contribution to Rubio's campaign was about at the maximum they could legally contribute that way, ~$10K.
Now what's astounding is that given the "drop in the bucket" nature of the $10K received directly from the NRA, Rubio wouldn't abjure accepting direct donations to his campaign from the NRA. Rubio's right in that strictly speaking he can't stop the NRA from running ads that endorse/support him. That said, he can (1) return their direct cash contributions and (2) tell them publicly not to spend money on his campaign.

Please return your comments to the actual thread topics:
  • Sen. Rubio's abjurance of and/or refusal to abjure NRA contributions
  • Sen. Rubio's receipt of NRA contributions
  • NRA expenditures on, to propone, or in support of Sen. Rubio's election efforts/campaigns
    • The nature and/or extent to which those contributions may or may not, in your opinion, constrain, govern or strongly influence Rubio's stances on gun-related matters.
  • Thoughts about whether Sen. Rubio should have directly (yes/no) answered Cameron Kasky's question.
