Blue Shield of California proposes 59% premium rate hike - Jan. 7, 2011

One of California's largest health insurers - Blue Shield - announced plans to hike its premiums by as much as 59%.

The jacked up premium rates are set to take effect on March 1, pending review from state insurance regulators. The move impacts 193,000 individual Blue Shield policy holders.

The company, a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association with 3.3 million members, which announced the move late Thursday, stressed that its decision has "almost nothing to do with the federal health reform law" and that ultimately the law will help slow down health care costs.

hahaha premium increases of 59% and they specifically state that its not because of the health care law. lets hear the GOP defend this one..

I note that the unnamed "member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association" fails to point to what is responsible for the exorbitant rate increase, or how the stupid Obungler care is supposed to make those rates go down.

Nothing to see here.

actually he says this:
"But responding to this most recent increase the company said, "our individual market medical costs are rising rapidly due to higher provider prices, increased utilization, and the fact that healthier people are dropping coverage during a bad economy," the company said."

or did you miss the 4th paragraph?

oh of course...well good luck getting that increase anyway. Sibelius has a Zero tolerance policy for this kind of thing, I am gonna keep an eye on this event.

But responding to this most recent increase the company said, "our individual market medical costs are rising rapidly due to higher provider prices, increased utilization, and the fact that healthier people are dropping coverage during a bad economy," the company said.

let me bend that cost curve for you sir....olive?

your reading comprehension is really lacking.

the company had to file paper work stating their intent to increase premiums. the company is not disputing this at all. they freely released the information. this isnt an insider report, they company is freely admitting this.

who was that for?

Since government already regulates rate increases, what will more government do where rate increases are concerned?

if you read the article, which im about 99.9% sure you didnt, you would have seen this section:

"Despite health reform, that assistance will be limited. The federal government does not have the authority to review and strike down unreasonable rate increase requests.

Historically, that authority lies with individual states. But some states don't have any rate review process at all and insurers can hike rates as much as they want.

Under California law, the state insurance commissioner has no authority to reject excessive premium increases.

"Many Californians will no doubt be surprised to learn that the Insurance Commissioner does not have the legal authority to reject excessive health insurance premium increases," California Commissioner Dave Jones said in a statement Thursday."

So, now a eeeeevilll price gouging, policy dropping, refusing-to-pay insurance company now has credibility?

Yer killin' me, Larry!

so what you are saying that you are ok with seeing a 59% increase in your health care premiums...... well done sir. i hope your provider does this to you next.

I'm saying that you're taking the word of an unnamed representative(?) from an insurance company.

And here I thought that socialists/progressives didn't trust a word that ushered from profiteering administrative suits from insurance companies.

like i said your reading comprehension is solely lacking. the company is freely admitting the rate hikes and reason for increasing them. why are you arguing this?

if youre agreeing that they company can increase rates 59% thus pushing more people out of the market, just say so..

What does the insurance commissioner in the state of California do?

I'm saying that the spokeshole is unnamed.

I'm saying that cats like you generally believe that insurance companies are the scummiest double-dealing dirtbags on the planet.

Yet, you'll take the word of an unnamed spokeshole , from one of the scummiest double-dealing dirtbag industries on the planet, when it comports with your biases.

Never saw that one coming.
