California will close State Parks But Fund Illegals education

Let's see how Governor Perry handled the situation in Texas.......

The number of illegal immigrant college students paying in-state tuition and receiving financial aid at Texas' public colleges and universities continues to climb, according to state higher education records.

During the fall semester, 12,138 students - about 1 percent of all Texas college students - benefited from the state law granting in-state tuition, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Most of the immigrants among those students are illegal, and some others are not legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens

Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008.

Even so, Gov. Rick Perry supports the law aiding illegal immigrant students. In a recent debate, he said the students are on the path to citizenship.

Yeah that is one problem with Perry we have as conservatives, Although Texas is not broke like California....

How much is the Golden State in the red?

We've grown numb to annual budget meltdowns - shortfalls of $20 billion have become the norm. But what is our state's total debt? Would you believe at least $265 billion?

California's debt sorts into three buckets:

Budget deferrals, required reimbursements and related debt now total nearly $40 billion. How did "kicking the can down the road" get the state to such a large number? Budget gimmicks to achieve a balanced budget for one year (borrowing from local government, required repayments to public schools and other one-time actions) have added up. As Gov. Jerry Brown highlighted in his budget proposal, most of the budget "solutions" over the past three years "were temporary or failed because of court decisions or faulty assumptions."

Don't you bet on it......

I am more concerned with our education system. Perhaps you should be as well. :eusa_whistle:

I would be too. California used to be number ONE in education in the world. now because of the huge illegal populations and the decrease in revenue and the huge deficit the education in California is in the shitter. Illeagls aren't good for anyone.

So explain to me who hires illegals? One of my jobs was to recruit and hire new deputies; to be a state, county, city or local district employee one must provide proof of the ability to work in the United States. So, government workers are all legally employed.

One argument posted ad nauseam is that small business is the engine which moves our economy. It seems small business - restaurants, roofing companies, painting & other contractors, landscape companies, lumber yards and larger business, motels, auto dealarships, big farma, etc. hire mostly spanish speaking employees. I don't ask for green cards, but it's obvious these businesses aren't hiring the local native born American.

Yeah, you might want to look at that again. CA and TX actually have very similar budget shortfalls.

As for what to cut and what not to cut...I'll take education (as in funding it) over State Parks when having to choose between the two. I would also like to point out that BOTH bills have yet to pass.

Voters had a chance in Nov 2010 to fund the Parks with a vehicle license fee of $18 per year. It would have raised enough to keep the parks open AND day use at State Parks would have been FREE. That proposition was rejected by 57% of the electorate. (ALL of whom live in the more conservative interior)

I'd also like to point out that the closure of the state parks was proposed while the lying cheating Republican Governator was in office, not Governor Brown. The former Governator threatened to close 220 of the state's 278 State Parks. (which is what prompted the citizen initiative to save the parks)

From the article:

not all of that would go to immigrants because some legal residents from other states could qualify for the funds as well, according to an analysis prepared for a state Senate committee.

and

California is one of about a dozen states that allows illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition, based on attendance and graduation from a state high school. Only a handful of states also allow for financial aid for those students.

So it looks like it isn't just California. Better check your own state before bashing someone else's ;)

Excellent link, knowing the Kochroaches are funding this effort to limit access to the polls makes it more obvious that we are on the slippery slope towards becoming a full fledged plutocracy.

You'd lost me for a sec...then I realized you were commenting on my signature. Yeah, it is a good article.

TX and CA are very different financially.

Texas has $75b of revenue to play with and a $9b "rainy day fund" to bring their Debt down to about $6b if they spent it. TX can solve its budget gap. (cash rich due to oil industry)

CA on the other hand
The 2011-12 Budget: California's Fiscal Outlook
Has a $25b Debt and an annual deficit of $23b, so its sinking fast. They must be looking for a bailout, which the GOP won't allow. CA is on the verge of bankruptcy due to their "liberalism/socialism" and they are driving off the cliff...

Illegals do not deserve to go to this countries schools.

So children should suffer for the "sins of their fathers"? These people we are talking about likely came here as children, brought by their parents. They've likely gone to US public schools and want what children raised in the US often want to do...go to college.

What's YOUR solution for these kids?

given that the major part of the population in the state of California are liberal, I'd hazard a guess that it's liberals who are hiring the illegals and paying them under the table. they then try to tax their way out of the shortfall this causes and the legitimate business then pack up and leave the state.. that's what I think, meanwhile you still have more and more and more illegals to educate with less and less and less money to do it..

Send them back to their own country with their parents. When they come here legally then they deserve it until then they don't.

Wanting to fix something that is STILL broken...and getting brokener...isn't whining...but let's not derail this thread. Start another on how "hacky" this excellent piece by Ari Berman is...

I have mixed emotions on this.

There is the fiscal conservative in me that says government cannot continue to tax the unwilling--taxation without representation and all that--for non essentials and we simply cannot continue spend beyond our means until we can't even keep the essential things running. So, if the state cannot keep the parks open they should close them; however, the people themselves who value those parks could also start fund drives to keep them open as a private initiative. Communities do it all the time to save a school or a library or a sports complex for the youth etc.

And then there is the suspicious jaded part of me that knows the state will continue to spend money on other non essentials because it is politically correct to do so. And it chooses someting that is particularly dear to people to cut as a ploy to get get them to agree to new taxes without putting up a fuss.

If I was governor, I would list all the things the government does that it does not absolutely have to do along with the cost to do those things, publish the amount that has to be cut, and let the people pick and choose which they want to keep and which they are more willing to let go.

Okay, maybe that isn't practical, but wouldn't it be interesting to see how that would go?

Then ... if the communities kick in and keep them open st their expense so to speak taxes should be lowered seeing as that portion is no longer be used, but we all know the government cant admit they don't need what they get and all want more!

Correct.

And punishing children for the ‘sins of their fathers’ violates the basic tenets of Anglo-American jurisprudence – declared un-Constitutional by the Court in Weber v. Aetna Casualty & Surety Co. (1972).

In essence California’s choice is not that difficult to make: keep parks open or educate its residents. Obviously the latter is the correct choice. It also comports with Constitutional case law, where the 14th Amendment affords basic rights to all persons in a given state’s jurisdiction, regardless of how they’re designated by a government agency. Indeed, an agency’s designation of a person doesn’t trump the Constitution.
