California facing higher $16 billion shortfall

Jerry Brown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nope prop 13 stripped the schools of revenue

After taking office, Brown gained a reputation as a fiscal conservative.[12] The American Conservative later noted he was "much more of a fiscal conservative than Governor Reagan."[13] His fiscal restraint resulted in one of the biggest budget surpluses in state history, roughly $5 billion.[14][15] For his personal life, Brown refused many of the privileges and perks of the office, forgoing the newly constructed governor's residence and instead renting a modest apartment at the corner of 14th and N Streets, adjacent to Capitol Park in downtown Sacramento.[16] Instead of riding as a passenger in a chauffeured limousine as previous governors had done, Brown drove to work in a Plymouth Satellite sedan.[17][18]

Brown was both in favor of a Balanced Budget Amendment and opposed to Proposition 13, the latter of which would decrease property taxes and greatly reduce revenue to cities and counties.[24] When Proposition 13 passed in June 1978, he heavily cut state spending and, along with the Legislature, spent much of the $5 billion surplus to meet the proposition's requirements and help offset the revenue losses which made cities, counties and schools more dependent on the state.[14][24] His actions in response to the proposition earned him praise from Proposition 13 author Howard Jarvis who went as far to make a television commercial for Brown just before his successful reelection bid in 1978.[24][25]

So you're going to ignore the fact CA ignores federal law and has to care for illegals?

gunna ignore the fact that tax and waste has been the formula for decades?

you're pathetic

do they cost half the revenue coming in?

NO

but prop 13 did

" cost half the revenue "

wtf does that mean?

oh wait, its the lib mantra that the gov. owns your labor ( income) and they let you keep what they think is adequate....

if I don't earn an income to sppt 10K a year in CC payments...I don't spend the money, see how that works? now one oculd say hey you will get a rasie next year so just spend ahead and pay it down when your raise comes in....but, what happens if I don't get that rasie?

see how that works?

if prop 13 didn't exist we would be here anyway, becasue libs recognize NO limit to, well just about anything, spending most of all, there is always another project or entitlement to fund...

Californians deserve what they get. They could have voted in a conservative and gotten some fiscal sanity restored to the State but they chose to vote in Democrats instead.

Contrast their 16 billion dollar shortfall with Wisconsin...who in just two years under Scott Walker has gone from a 3 billion dollar deficit to a projected surplus. Maybe Cali can "rent" Walker to come in and fix things for them too?

it doesnt matter who is elected Governor of this State.....you can put in the most Conservative motherfucker on the planet.....he then has to go up against the Sacramento wall of Legislators.....this State has been called "ungovernable" for a reason.....

Progressive gov. writ large ......

California's state spending has ballooned in the last decade at a rate much higher than the rate of inflation and rate of population growth in the state. According to Tom Campbell, California's finance director in 2004-2005, if the 1999-2000 budget of former California governor Gray Davis had been increased over the next decade by a factor representing the inflation rate and California's population growth in that time, California would now be experiencing a budget surplus, rather than a deficit even with the recent revenue decline due to the state's economic recession.<6> Instead, California has had a 50% spending increase over the past five years.<7> "

If you start going through websites dedicated to business and manufacturing, it's not as bleak in California as right wingers make it out to be. California still has the 8th largest economy in the world. They still give tens of billions to the federal government (money that's used to prop up Red States). A lot of the skilled labor that's now in Texas has moved from California. Texas doesn't really do much to develop their own. No Red State does. They tend to think education is for snobs. A lot of their skilled labor are actually immigrants.

Notice how right wingers point fingers and the first thing they scream is, "They want to blame it on Republicans". Well, what can you say. Republicans have no solutions. Without solutions, you are part of the problem, if not the problem. And the fact is, most of the problems of the country, from racism to a ruined economy to a depleted military, to failures in Iraq and Afghanistan come from Republican Policies. It can hardly be denied.

bullshit......i used to deliver to a business complex here in the Anaheim Hills that had approx 300 different businesses in it......now there are 107 left.....the complex had to sell and till this day they cant fill it.....there are Vacant buildings that used to be full everywhere......even around Disneyland.....and that is a choice location....its funny Dean how you did not put up a link backing what you say about how its not that bleak in California.....but go ahead put one up....i will put up 2 for your one saying just the opposite....apparently you dont follow the news....Gov. Brown has just said its worse than what he thought.....so yea here comes more taxes and what they like to call "Fees" around here......

You can keep Walker far from California thank you.

State faces $143 million budget shortfall by 2013

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's state budget condition has worsened to the point that Gov. Scott Walker and possibly the Legislature will need to take emergency steps to avoid being out of balance.
The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau on Thursday released the new projections that show the two-year budget will be $143 million short of balancing by July 2013.
Fiscal Bureau Director Bob Lang says in the memo to co-chairs of the Legislature's budget committee that the Walker administration is looking to address the problem through debt refinancing and restructuring.

At the time of the last estimate in October, the state's budget was projected to end with a positive $73 million balance.

A large reason for the change is a projected $273 million loss in tax collections.

I'd take a 143M shortfall over CA's 13B.
California blows. Those idiots get what they deserve. They could have thrown out Barbara Boxer and could have elected Meg Whitman. BUt the unions run the place now. CA is finished, our very own failed Greece right here in America.

Meg Whitman fucked herself didn't she?...and she would not have been worth a dam anyway.....

Dear idiots Prop 13 was your baby and it has starved cali of revenue for decades

Gov Browne when he was running for office promised free college
education to illegals.Said their was plenty of money.
I wonder if he still feels that way.

What a dumb ass,and all the dumb assess who voted for him.

he said that because he realized he stepped on his Dick when he made that stupid comment to appeal to the Latinos.....
