One of the kneejerk defenses I've seen by conservatives is that we should excuse whatever Cain is accused of because, hey, Clinton did worse, and he got a pass, and it's unfair to pick on Cain for the same thing.

Okay. Stop it. Seriously. Now.

A lot of problems with that reasoning.

First, if we said on principle that what Clinton did was wrong, then we really can't support Cain if he can't clear his name. You can't hold up a standard and then try to fudge it when your guy gets caught.

You have at least five women now accusing him of inappropriate behavior. Keep in mind, by this point in 1991, we had never heard of Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Juanita Broderick, et al. Monica Lewinsky was still a high school student. Clinton would have been slaughtered in today's media environment. The internet was limited and Drudge didn't exist yet.

I don't know if the women are telling the truth or not, but it really doesn't matter at this point. His own actions have shown his inability to run a campaign, much less the country. It's time to take serious looks at the professional politicians.
