CA Just Doesn't GET IT!

I honetly don't know how anyone can afford to live in that State.

As long as they keep electing Dems to the State Legislature CA will be in the hole.

Abject ignorance. Why not do a little research and find out what is really the cause of Californian's fiscal problems.

For the record, the new focus on Gov. Brown is based on the Republican fear that if he is able to get the modest tax increase passed, and if the result of his leadership - spending cuts and tax increases - solve the economic problems of our state, these ideas will surface across the nation.

Since the Bush tax cuts did not prevent a great recession, and sense Republicans all over the country are running on more tax cuts are the answer to fiscal health, any success of Gov. Brown puts them at risk.

Tax increases and spending cuts, huh? That's what you're going on, wry? How about the SPENDING on that high speed rail Brown is trying to push through, without the funding? Yeah...higher taxes to pay for their unfunded projects and pensions is more like it. But, hey....

High speed rail was on track (so to speak) WELL BEFORE BROWN TOOK OFFICE. You really ought to post on issues after doing a bit of research, the HS Rail project was passed by the voters (Prop 1A) in 2008. Brown too office in January 2011.

They have a huge budget crisis, yet they have the highest income tax in the US (topping at 10%) and the highest Corporate Tax in the WORLD! Their solution is tax the millionaire (you know the people making over $250K) more. They want to raise taxes by 3% to 13%!

They say that's the solution, but it's not. Corporation and rich people are running from CA. This move will acellerate it. You NEVER hear a copy naming CA as a destination to move operations, you never hear people starting up companies, retirees don't go to beautiful CA. No all you hear is this co move, this rich go moved etc.!

Gov Brown might be the worst Gov in US history (But think IL Gov Quinn beats him)!

Jerry Brown's tough sell on tax increases
Gov. Jerry Brown previewed his pitch for a package of five-year tax increases in a meeting with The Chronicle's editorial board Tuesday. By his own admission, it's a complicated argument and a tough sell - especially in comparison with the populist millionaires tax being pushed by the California Federation of Teachers.

"It's pretty clear. We know that if you tax 2 percent of the people to benefit 98 percent, that's a winner with the 98 percent," Brown said. "That's simple. That's third-grade arithmetic. The problem is, we have to put something together that works - the other people don't have to do that."

Brown said the teachers' proposed 3 percent tax on million-dollar incomes would do nothing to cure the state's structural deficit because its revenue would be directed to specific programs (60 percent education, 25 percent social services, 10 percent public safety, 5 percent road and bridge repair) "on top of" previously locked-in spending commitments, including for education.

They dont get it because the poeple in charge in Sacramento dont care if onething works versus another as they only care about ideological purity. Eventually they will run the state completely into the ground, and how deep it goes is only determined by how long it takes the billionares that run the state to realize this shit dont work. Hopefully that iwll be a long time from now and we can just give the state back to Mexico and say 'Good reidance'.

Wonder if the UK would take New England back....?

Just which party has had control of the State legislature and had control of the purse strings, in CA since forever??

to be clear here, Ghook has no choice in the matter. Board rules restrict how much you can copy paste an article. Three paragraphs is pretty much the limit. He did include the link, so Ghook did exactly what the rules require.

He wants it to get started and it's still unfunded. Don't be so willfully ignorant, wry. There still won't be enough money after raising taxes for everything that state wants funded. Your lip service of raising taxes and cut spending is just that...lip service.
sheesh

well i understand that project is in Limbo right now..... Congress has withdrawn future funds from the project is what i read in the paper down here....something about using government funds to lobby Congress and the State Legislature for the project.....not the thing to do apparently....

Still don't see how anyone can afford to live there. Jeeze.
we do just fine...... ill take my 85 degree sunny weather day and enjoy it at the beach.

Just be sure not to bring a frisbee with you.
only in LA county, Orange County and San Diego county are fine..

thats a stupid law, i guess its been on the books for years and no one ever enforced it. they are working to get rid of it anyways.

im not sure the people would accept a sales tax increase. although at the same time the cuts to schools are hitting them hard, so some people may be willing to sacrifice a bit more. i do think its a good idea to put it to a vote of the people instead of the legislature doing it themselves. there has already been some drastic cuts in order to try and balance the budget, but you can only cut so far.

$1 billion in California budget cuts to kick in soon - Los Angeles Times

"This is not the way we'd like to run California, but we have to live within our means," Brown said at a Capitol news conference. But he noted that the cuts could have been worse.
Maybe CA should do what WI did! Walker inherited a HUGE deficit. Per capitawise it was larger than CA! Walker didn't want to cut services, close schools, fire teacher, raising taxes was out of the question, but balancing the budget was a MUST!

He took on the Unions, made they actually pay for some of their pension and and healthcare (still far less than the private sector pays for their's) and he laid off NO TEACHERS (in fact WI is one of the few States hiring teachers), closed no schools, cut no services and now they have a budget surplus!

i find this line the most interesting. though
"Republicans blamed the latest round of budget cuts on Democrats. Sen. Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), vice chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, chastised the majority party for having passed "a budget without Republican input that included rosy revenue assumptions and onerous trigger cuts to education should the tax money not come in."

repubs blaming budget cut on the dems? thought id never hear the day when the GOP was against cutting spending, but having majorities on both houses the dems have the power. so now we will really see if spending cuts really do promote growth and balance the budget.
He is absolutely right. They Dimocrats always predict, with the raise in taxes, revenues will rise this much and THEY NEVER COME CLOSE. They cut education in one of the worst state education systems in the country, when they should be restructuring the pension, health benefits and tenure system (which a rubber room) of the teachers!

He is complainting about cuts, he is complaining about the Dimocrat plan WHICH SUCKS!

I guarantee, they will pass a 3% increase on millionaires, raise the sales tax and next year have and even worse budget deficit!
