WASHINGTON — President Bush secretly approved orders in July that for the first time allow American Special Operations forces to carry out ground assaults inside Pakistan without the prior approval of the Pakistani government, according to senior American officials

In Hunt for Bin Laden, a New Approach

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Frustrated by repeated dead ends in the search for Osama bin Laden, U.S. and Pakistani officials said they are questioning long-held assumptions about their strategy and are shifting tactics to intensify the use of the unmanned but lethal Predator drone spy plane in the mountains of western Pakistan.

The number of Hellfire missile attacks by Predators in Pakistan has more than tripled, with 11 strikes reported by Pakistani officials this year, compared with three in 2007. The attacks are part of a renewed effort to cripple al-Qaeda's central command that began early last year and has picked up speed as President Bush's term in office winds down, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials involved in the operation

Try again. The Pakistani govt. knew, They just don't get to know what the targets are beforehand. The NY Times jumped the gun again.

At the same time, the former official said, the Pakistan government recognizes that its settled areas are increasingly targeted by terrorist and militant attacks emanating from the tribal region and its military is not equipped to counter the threat.

You must understand that the Democrats have been right on every issue for the past 8 years. The GOP are just very clever at spinning the conversation to make the Dems look wrong and then ultimately the GOP adopts the same ideas as their own.

The Republican Plan For 2008 Begins Today

It’s difficult to watch Democrats play checkers while Republicans play chess with Iraq. It’s particularly difficult on Memorial Day as more Americans and Iraqis die. But the Republican Party has been playing politics with Iraq since the day after the Supreme Court installed George W. Bush in office in 2001, and they have no intention of stopping now. They may have borrowed some techniques from Richard Nixon, but they have no intention of repeating his mistakes.

The political calculus being pursued by Karl Rove and the Republican Party with regard to Iraq and the 2008 elections is a simple four-step process:

1. Shift “ownership” of the downside of the “war” and occupation of Iraq to the Democrats.

2. Begin to wind down American involvement in the occupation of Iraq no later than mid-2008.

3. “Claim victory and get out” of direct combat in Iraq by the early fall of 2008.

4. Win big in the 2008 elections by having “won” a “war.”

We warned the country that we were headed to and/or in a recession and the GOP denied it until January 2008. Too late.

We knew the housing crash was coming and you waited too long. Mission accomplished. The rich made a fortune, the poor got fucked and the banks got bailed out by the US tax payers.

I'll say it over and over again. The GOP want to privatize profits and socialize the losses.

America, wake up!!!

We were right about Iraq, Afganistan, the middle class suffering, global warming, stem cell, GOP spending, etc.

What were the Republicans right about? The surge? Give me a break.

So, if you, Bush, and Dilloduck knew where Osama Bin Ladin was in the pakistan border region, you wouldn't land a missile on his ass until you had gone through diplomatic channels to notify the Pakinstani government.

I disagree. I think Obama does too. There may be instances of actionable intelligence where we should put a bullet through someone's head as quickly as possible.

Depends on if you want him dead or alive.....

By the way, it's super easy for a presidential candidate (or anyone for that matter) to make a statement and then take credit for something the president did....

Just because your personal preference of a presidential candidate favored that tactic, doesn't mean that he gets all the credit and gave Bush the idea.

I'm not a big Bush fan either, but I also don't play this political partisan BS.

When you mentioned "the poor got fucked" and "housing crash", how does the poor even afford a "house"? The lenders should have knew. The poor people should have knew. But guess what, both of them got really screwed. How did the rich get money when they basically lost tons. When the poor couldn't afford to pay their loans, who loses? Both. Why were people getting homes that they couldn't afford? Why were lenders handing loans to people that couldn't afford? Should we blame both the lender and the naive homeowner?

You also mentioned "middle class suffering." They will be when you raise taxes on the rich who will cut back in other ways (jobs, shift them overseas, cut cost). Taxes were created to punish the wealth producers of our nation. Why punish the producers and not the consumers? It is the consumers who were part of the housing bubble bursting in air. And why did Enron, Worldcom, and a bunch more corruptions uncovered during the Bush administration. According to you, Bush is for the rich folks who really hurt the "middle class." However, i do know that not all rich people are corrupt.

I am for a single tax rate that is equal, fair, non-discriminatory, yada yada for ALL AMERICANS. I am not rich but i'm not jealous of people who are. A lot of them stay rich because they make the right economic decision. Maybe if people like you made the right economic decision, you would be in the same tax bracket. In the current case, you'll pay higher taxes. Remember the bracket, 10% 15% (big jump) 25% 28% 33% 35%. The highest bracket pays 25% more than the lowest. Talk about the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
