Attorney General Eric Holder called it "idiotic" and "dangerous." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says it is "disrespectful." A State Department spokesman called it "un-American." President Obama weighed in that "this is a destructive act."

The Obama administration is roundly denouncing plans to burn copies of the Quran. Christian leaders rightly condemn it as "appalling" and "disgusting" and say it "violates both our Christian and American identities."

So why the silence when Bibles were burned?

Hypocrisy Flashback.....

After defeating their rivals in Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement, Muslim extremists are focusing their attacks on Christians in Gaza City. Christians in Gaza City have issued an appeal to the international community and a plea for protection against the increased attacks by Muslim extremists.
Father Manuel Musallem, head of Gaza’s Latin church, told the AP that Muslims have ransacked, burned and looted a school and convent that are part of the Gaza Strip’s small Romany Catholic community. He told the AP that crosses were broken, damage was done to a statue of Jesus, and at the Rosary Sister School and nearby convent, prayer books were burned.
Gunmen used the roof of the school during the fighting, and the convent was “desecrated,” Mussalem told the AP.
“Nothing happens by mistake these days,” he said.
Father Musalam additionally told The Jerusalem Post that the Muslim gunmen used rocket-propeled grenades (RPGs) to blow through the doors of the church and school, before burning Bibles and destroying every cross they could get their hands on.
Catholic Online reports that the heads of Christian churches in the Holy Land have urged both sides to put aside their weapons, noting that the infighting diverted international attention from the national goal of Palestinian independence.
“This domestic fighting where brother draws his weapon against brother is detrimental to all the aspirations of achieving security and stability for the Palestinian people,” they said. “In the name of the one and only God as well as in the name of each devastated Palestinian, many of whom are still dying, we urge our brothers in the Fatah and Hamas movements to listen to the voice of reason, truth and wisdom.”

(CNN) May 22, 2009 — Military personnel threw away, and ultimately burned, confiscated Bibles that were printed in the two most common Afghan languages amid concern they would be used to try to convert Afghans, a Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday.
The unsolicited Bibles sent by a church in the United States were confiscated about a year ago at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan because military rules forbid troops of any religion from proselytizing while deployed there, Lt. Col. Mark Wright said.
Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said.
“The decision was made that it was a ‘force protection’ measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims,” Wright told CNN on Tuesday.
Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said.
The Bibles were written in the languages Pashto and Dari.

Imo, it's because it's much more acceptable to bash that which you know, rather than that which you fear.

No, Jack, you guys are far more in bed with the bad side of jihadism and the left ever could be. The only difference between folks like you and the jihadists is the simple fact that you are cowards.

Short answer: Contrary to many who post here, it is because we don't worship a book. We worship the author of the Book. Islam worships the book.

I believe the initial motive for the burning was to make a statem, ent that we son't approve of Muslim disrespect of Americans as demonstrated in the building of the mosque near ground ZERO.

I believe our government is the cowards, and a few of our military leaders who cry when they are getting threatened, but are unwilling to go after the real enemy full force. The enemy is nere now, and we MUST make sure they DON'T have the same rights the Constitution offers real Americans.

I think we are headed for war right here in the USA.

It is because everyone is SO worried about offending the "peaceful" muslims.

I dont care...burn them ALL. Equal opportunity, freedom of religion and free speech all rolled into one.

You wing nut reactionary activists with an evil agenda are amazing. You want to shut off free speech, you want to return the rule of man rather than the rule of law, and you want the President to do that. Fuck you.

I seem to remember several years ago, before 9/11, some controversy over a painting of a Black woman, who was supposed to represent the Virgin Mary, splattered with elephant dung. I forget what the message was supposed to be, but to a lot of Catholics, this was about as offensive as you can get. The mainstream media, however, basically portrayed Catholics and others who were offended as unsophisticated bumpkins who didn't have an appreciation for modern "art." And that was the whole point of the story: even though highly offensive to a MAINSTREAM GROUP (Catholics make up roughly 25% of the population in the US), artists had the right to express themselves no matter what.

And here we are, roughly 10 or so years later, and now the media is saying that we should be sensitive to other religions.

No, I don't advocate burning Bibles, Qurans or any other religious books, and no, I don't think a painting with elephant shit splattered on it is art. I'm just pointing out that it seems that if it's anything that offends the majority religion in the US (the various versions of Christianity), then it's a matter of getting in step with the 21st century. But if it's going to offend some other religion, in particular one that still clings to 12th century standards for the treatment of women, the definition of religious dedication, etc., well, wait, slow the hell down and be aware of these sensitivities!

I don't get it.
