What should Romney have done to keep the man from resigning? Tie him to a chair?

Made a strong case for him, in public. Pushed back at the fundies who were calling for his head. You know, shown leadership rather that political opportunism and lack of a backbone.

They also could have not told the guy to keep quiet during a conference call with other conservatives. But hey, "the Left" is at fault, too, for just mentioning it.

If I offer you a job as the Executive Vice President and I put you in the mail room delivering coffee to the cubicles, because someone objected to you, and you quit, that's pretty much the same as firing you.

He wasn't allowed to do the job he was hired to do because religious whackjobs objected. That's a firing in effect if not name.
