I have decided to be nicer to rdean, so I will save him the trouble of coming in here and blaming the Republicans for this.

Those nasty Republicans are at it again, why do they hate poor people? And Science? And minorities?

California Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed 2012-2013 budget would eliminate a second year of science as a minimum requirement to graduate from high school.

The proposed change to science graduation requirements comes as President Barack Obama is urging colleges to graduate 10,000 more engineers a year and 100,000 new teachers who majored in the science, technology engineering and math fields.

Only 21 percent of 12th graders surveyed nationwide in 2009 by the National Assessment of Educational Progress scored proficient or above on questions related to physical, life, Earth and space science.

At the elementary level, a recent study led by the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley found 10 percent of California elementary school students regularly get hands-on science lessons and one-third of elementary school teachers feel prepared to teach science.

And the dearth of in-depth science study is more acute on campuses that serve low-income students, the study found.

And we all know that all California's budget problems are because of the decades of republican controlled Legislature pissing away the money on the rich.

From the same Jerry Brown that said the trouble with the economy is that too many people were working and not enough people were on welfare.

» Jerry Brown Flashback: We Need More Welfare and Fewer Jobs - Big Government

The conventional viewpoint says we need a jobs program and we need to cut welfare. Just the opposite! We need more welfare and fewer jobs. Jobs for every American is doomed to failure because of modern automation and production. We ought to recognize it and create an income-maintenance system so every single American has the dignity and the wherewithal for shelter, basic food, and medical care. I’m talking about welfare for all

If this is the goal, isn't a science education a waste?

Pot head Jerry, the former Mr. Jane Fonda, is in a world of hurt. He has to cut social spending or increase taxes on people who are already hurting. I don't envy his position.

Something like 60 percent of the California budget can not be touched by the Legislature because the voters created the programs and voted them in. Arnold found out he had almost nothing to work with to cut the Budget.

You know I don't know if this is true or not, I heard it in passing, someone in the gop proposed putting Pell grants and other forms of Obama money on a graduated scale, the full grant if you enroll in scientific curriculum, less for the traditional liberals arts etc...if true I am surprised the screams have not started yet from the left.... I think the idea holds merit.

as for the OP....*shrugs* seriously, what do we expect? some form or normality from Moonbeam? ;)

:clap2:

So instead of hiring more teachers to teach science, let's cut it!
Science (the hands on kind) is my child's favorite subject.
Science is what turned on her light!

Gotta fund THOSE UNFUNDED LIABILITIES on the backs and minds of our children!

I don't think there should be mandatory testing at all.

I was gonna' make this a separate thread but I figger I should just post here as it pertains to the topic and I know YOU GUYS will probably actually read it!

The Assembly budget committee is considering a bill today that would enable $865 million of borrowing from existing state accounts, Senate Bill 95. Chiang, after consultation with the Department of Finance and state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, is also seeking about $2.4 billion in delayed payments to universities, counties and Medi-Cal, as well as additional borrowing from outside investors.

Absent these actions, the state would fall below its prudent $2.5 billion cash cushion on Feb. 29, Chiang estimated. On March 8, the state would actually end up $730 million in the red. The state would be below the safe cash cushion for several weeks ending April 13, save for several days at the end of March.

With such actions, Chiang believes the state would not have to use IOUs or delay tax refunds, maneuvers that have been relied upon in previous years. But Chiang also said that "more cash solutions may be required if our revenues continue to erode or if disbursements significantly exceed estimates."

The state needs to decide if it going to take care of the financial needs of its citizens... or the financial needs of illegals. The fact that illegals are a drain on the budget must be dealt with.

This is true, yet I read somewhere that illegals count for 50% of the states deficit. I have no faith that the other 50% would be dealt with.
