Syria's Muslim Brotherhood Rejects Western Intervention - WSJ.com

Rumors are circulating that a new version of the Syrian MB is taking shape with Turkish officials likely pushing Syria to open up the political system and allow for a legalized Islamist opposition.
Turkey would likely give assurances to al Assad that it will use its influence to contain the opposition and that the regime will be more stable overall if it gives limited concessions to such opposition forces now to avoid further street demonstrations. That way, Turkey would not only have influence over the regime, but also the opposition in Syria to manage its next-door neighbor.

Brotherhood has been banned since 1962 in Syria.

ISTANBUL—Syria's Muslim Brotherhood said Friday that they support Western military intervention in Libya, but see no need for similar action in their own country.

Libyan President Moammar "Gadhafi was killing his own people. There was no other option" than to impose a no-fly zone and act to protect civilians, the movement's political chief, Mohamed Tayfur, said in an interview.

In Syria, by contrast, "this is an internal problem. We believe it can be solved as brothers and that it would be easy to solve this problem internally," Mr. Tayfur said.

Türkiye için Esad'ın arkasında durmak zor

Countries close to Syria, such as Turkey, have responded by distancing themselves from the Assad clan. Syria has encouraged Turkey's increasingly assertive regional leadership in recent years because of its importance as a trade partner, its potential as a counterweight to the West and as an alternative to the relationship with Iran.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was harshly critical of Mubarak, has long been a friend of Assad. He told a news conference Tuesday that Turkey was displeased by events in Syria. "During my conversation with Assad, I have conveyed our concern to him," he said, according to the semiofficial Anatolia news agency. "We do not desire an antidemocratic approach in Syria."

Syrian opposition figures and Turkish democracy activists appeared together Tuesday on Al Jazeera television live from Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, condemning Assad's regime.

There will now be sent an envoy to Assad with preparations handed over to him.

Many Syrians regard the reforms announced last week as an empty gesture.
"There are more steps to be taken in Syria," Erdogan told a joint news conference with the visiting premier of Kyrgyzstan.

Erdogan also said, that any further massacre like the one in Hama will put a weight on Syria from which it can't recover. In that case humanity and Turkey will have to do what is their responsibility. He has advised Assad to remove emergency-law not only from paper and switch to multi-party democracy.
The way Assad has handled the situation has exploded, the whole issue is likely to come up to UN.
