BEIJING - At least 20 foreign visitors have been detained in China for alleged terror links, diplomats in Beijing said Wednesday.
The tourists have been in detention since last Friday when they were held from Ordos, Inner Mongolia. They include 10 South Africans, nine Britons and one Indian national. A veteran anti-apartheid activist from South Africa is among the detainees.
Six of Britons were allowed to board a flight for Britain, according to a spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. They were expected to arrive in London on Thursdayafter being deported from China.
"Consular staff members have visited the group to provide assistance and we are liaising with Chinese authorities," an FCO spokeswoman said in a brief statement.
