Farmers tell Gove: lack of migrant workers now 'mission critical'

The number of EU27 workers coming to Britain are declining, partly because of Brexit and the weaker pound, but also because of improvement in employment opportunities in eastern European countries such as Poland, from where many harvest workers came.

Farmers have been demanding a return to the seasonal agriculture workers scheme, which was scrapped in 2013, to allow the hiring of pickers from non-EU countries this summer.

I am glad that our farmers are suffering. Every field seemed to have a brexit poster up during the referendum.

And now they are begging for non EU "darkies" to be imported to help pick their shitty fruit and veg. You couldnt make it up. Well they were warned.

Look at fat ass Tommy complaining that migrants won't get food for him

How did they live before the migrant's?
Depends how far back you want to go. I picked strawberries and raspberries when I was a youth. Farms stopped employing people when machines were developed that could replace them.Gypsies used to go from farm to farm as well.

EU workers have been coming over for at least 20 years.

The work is hard and the pay is shit and because of that the brits dont want to do it.
The farmers cant pay more because the big supermarkets wont shoulder increased costs and so its a vicious circle. The state of our farming is a clusterfuck.

Your entire system relies on there always being poor foreigners to exploit for cheap labor.

The Eastern Bloc economies have been improving, so you can't conclusively blame Brexit for the lack of migrant farm workers. You could be experiencing the same problem regardless.

Brexit being the main problem.

so, you think it's ok for landowners to take advantage of poor people? What happens if poland becomes more wealthy? Pick up workers from some other destitute country?

Brexit being the main problem.

That's not what it says. That's your opinion.

Its the first reason given. Add that to the rise in hate crime since brexit and the UK is a lot less attractive. We are also seeing a similar exodus in other areas such as the health service.

I would be delighted if Poland becomes more wealthy. The major benefit of the EU is helping poorer countries achieve higher standards of living. We have seen it in Ireland, Portugal and Spain already.

Just because it came first in the sentence doesn't make it the main reason. It very clearly says "partly because of Brexit and the weaker pound, but also because of improvement in employment opportunities in eastern European countries such as Poland, from where many harvest workers came."

It's a combination of multiple factors. It your solely your own biased opinion that Brexit is the most important.

The weaker pound is a result of brexit and has made other opportunities more attractive. Its a fact not opinion.
