Impasse broken in House on payroll tax cut: aide

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner has informed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that he will set a vote in the House on a Senate-passed two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, a Democratic leadership aide said on Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called on the House to pass a temporary extension of the tax cut and then move to congressional negotiations on a payroll tax cut that would extend through 2012.

This is the right thing to do.

No Gloating. The GOP was about to be handed their livers.

Two moths wasn't the real answer. But what are you going to do? The right thing was hard to do.

I just searched the board (through the search finder) and founder there were no less than 22 threads on the impasse on the payroll tax bill between the Senate and the House. Now that the impasse is broken, no one seems to care.

I find that is interesting. It appears that the issue of $1000 coming out of the SS fund per person wasn't the issue but it was just an opportunity to spur a Republican - Democrat bitch fest.

As usual. Not issues, but attacking the throats of the opposing ideologs.

Any money that stays with those that earn it is a good thing, especially in this economy.

On a side note, I love it how my friends on the left are all for Socialist Insecurity until the working nan is about to get hit for $20 extra out of his wallet a week...

Glad the extension passed - just sayin...

The two month extension is paid for. Now they have to figure out how to pay for it for a year.

That's just it. There will be a hole where the funds should be in the SS fund. That's the problem. That tax cut sounded good at the time, but it was shorting SS, wasn't it? We've been robbing SS for years.

There's no "Paying for" those tax cuts. No one is getting more money. It;s taking away the revenue that should be going into the Social Security Fund. They are playing games.

The money for the 2 month extension isn't coming out of the SS trust fund, but from the general fund. Money for the year long extension needs to be paid for. Democrats wanted to pay for it with a small tax on the wealthiest Americans.

Like I said, the money is coming out at all. But it has to be replaced when John Doe doesn't put in. I'm coming around to a small to moderate tax hike on the rich. Just as long as it doesn't hit small business owners.

The tax increase proposed by the Dems would not have affected small businesses in the slightest and the people it would have affected wouldn't have even noticed it.

The current extension is not coming out of the SS trust fund, period.

The really great thing is that we get to revisit the republicans being on the wrong side of the issue in 60 days. Hope they've learned something here... :eusa_whistle:

Yes, that's the shame of it.

McConnell's proposal was seen throwing a lifeline to House Republicans who have come under intense criticism from Republican senators and leading conservatives for blocking a bipartisan Senate bill, which would avert an effective $1,000-a-year tax increase on the average worker starting on January 1.

It’s sad and telling that the republican motive is partisan self-preservation, as opposed to doing what’s best for the Nation.

Well, it's a start that it is actually going to be voted on, but whether or not the House will actually pass it we will have to see.

If Boehner doesn't get the Tea Party ring out of his nose, he is going to lose more than just the Majority leadership. He finally did the right thing, but it took everything except a labotomy to convince him. I will give it to the GOP Senators. They did what was right for the country, rather than what was "best" for their party.
