BREAKING: California Issues Unprecedented North American Climate Goal
April 29th, 2015 by Sandy Dechert

reduce California GHGs by 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.

Governor Brown meets with California mayors yesterday about the drought (Facebook/KSEE24).

Over four terms as governor, Brown has occupied the forefront of efforts by state governors to confront climate change. The state’s two-year-old cap-and-trade program and other climate-friendly policies have already set California GHG emissions on a downward course.

The new carbon reduction goal, which Brown calls the most aggressive GHG target by any North American government to date, eclipses even the one President Obama announced for the nation along with China’s pledge last fall (a CO2 emissions cut of 28% below 2005 levels by 2030). It matches the goal of the European Union. Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, Canada, says she applauds Governor Brown’s continued leadership on climate change, citing it as a confirmation that regional governments can play a very important role in shaping strong global agreement.

Ari Phillips reports in ThinkProgress:

“California’s planned reduction falls between the state’s 2020 goal of reducing GHGs to 1990 levels, and a long-term 2050 goal of reducing GHGs by 80 percent under 1990 levels. It also falls in line with the goal of limiting global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius.”

How????? is what we should be asking. Considering they may need to start a massive desalinization system soon, power is going to be at a premium.

Why? What good will it do? They live in a desert, it certainly will not produce any more drinking water..

You would think that would be their top priority.

Then again if they really want to reduce GHG's they will need to start with water vapor..

Climate change isn't just a local issue.

It isn't man made either!

Nuclear, geo-thermal, wind, solar, tidal and wave. ;0)

Good luck getting Nuclear approved in California.

Why would anyone in their right mind who claims to be for the environment be for something that has a half life of 5000 years and is stored in containers that last by estimates of 125 years..

Because they realize renewables can't maintain a grid's base load.
and if you wrap the bastards in concrete, they can last longer than 125 years.

Yes something that will need to be maintained for 5000 years..

Yep that makes sense..

We have a government that can not do a budget for the next week and you expect them to have a 5000 year plan for that?

Isolating something encased in concrete is an engineering problem, not a political problem. Again, concrete, lots, and a nice deep cave somewhere. If you glassify the waste you can even further reduce any possible radioactive escape.

It is a political problem all this storage will have to be paid for and maintained. How much will it cost for 5000 years?

I'm sure if 5000 years we will either figure out how to beam the waste into the nearest quantum singularity, or we will be long gone, and it will be up to the evolved Otters to figure it out.

Either way, meh.

Well we need to pay back 18 trillion first before that can happen.

Of course this all relative anyway as in 500 million years this planet will start to loose it's ability to support life, because of the big white star in the sky.

In 1.1 billion years from now, the Sun will be 10% brighter than it is today. This extra energy will cause a moist greenhouse effect in the beginning, similar to the runaway warming on Venus. But then the Earth’s atmosphere will dry out as the water vapor is lost to space, never to return.

No worries. By that time my robot consciousness will surely have figured out Faster than Light travel.
